For Emilee Klein, the end came with a thud. Her drive off the eighth tee struck one of the scenic but lethal oak trees that adorn Oakmont Country Club. A groan rose from the gallery of loved ones and fans who had watched her grow up on this course and followed her every stroke in the LPGA's Los Angeles Women's Championship on Sunday. Klein never quite recovered from her subsequent bogey on No. 8.

Laura Davies at her rainy-day best and the Southland weather at its sorry worst. How's that for a nasty 1-2 punch for the field to face at the L.A. Women's Championship on Saturday at Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley? Davies shot a one-under-par 71 in the second round of the 54-hole tournament, increasing a one-stroke lead after the first round and inching closer to her first LPGA Tour victory in 15 months.

Muffin Spencer-Devlin is in the back seat of an idling patrol car, handcuffed, furiously trying to kick out the rear window. It is the morning of Jan. 7, less than two weeks before she will start the LPGA season, and Spencer-Devlin is on 47th Street in Manhattan, around the corner from her new apartment. The handcuff around her right wrist is so tight that her pinkie is numb.

The big story at the Los Angeles Women's Championship Saturday at Oakmont Country Club was, of course, the weather. Play was suspended because of rain and the event was shortened to 36 holes with plans to finish today. But what else is new? Seems like weather has been the big story at every golf tournament in the country this year. The PGA Tour's ATT National Pro-Am at Pebble Beach was suspended until August by rain. The Buick Invitational in La Jolla was shortened to 54 holes because of rain.
