First airlines cut back on in-flight food. Then they added fees to check your luggage. Now one airline is putting ads where passengers can't avoid seeing them: on the backs of the tray tables that must remain locked and upright during takeoff and landing. The new advertising plan, announced Wednesday by AirTran Airways, a low-cost, Florida-based airline, is the latest in a trend among recession-battered airlines to increase revenue by charging for extra products and services such as onboard wireless Internet, snacks, drinks and pillows.

A new study shows that when airlines such as JetBlue, Spirit, Frontier, Alaska and Southwest launch service on an existing domestic route, the average price from all carriers drops as much as 67%. It's good news for travelers, but aviation experts say most popular routes are still dominated by the four biggest carriers: United, Delta, Southwest and the soon-to-be-merged American and US Airways.

JetBlue Airways said it would begin its first daily, nonstop service between Long Beach and San Francisco International airports in October. The low-cost airline, which is based in New York, said its first two daily flights would begin Oct. 18, and a third would be added Nov. 2. One-way fares begin at $49.

Mexico has temporarily grounded Aviacsa airlines after officials reported irregularities in the maintenance of 25 planes. The Transportation and Communications Department said the low-cost airline has 60 days to fix the problems. The department said the problems put passengers at risk, but Aviacsa denied any safety problems.

If you like ultra-low airfares combined with dozens of passenger fees, get ready for the new Frontier Airlines. Republic Airways Holdings Inc. has agreed to sell the Denver-based carrier to Indigo Partners, the investors who helped finance the super-cheap carrier Spirit Airlines. Under the agreement announced Tuesday, Indigo will pay Republic $36 million in cash and take on $109 million in debt, according to a statement released by Republic Airway Holdings. Frontier, already considered a low-cost airline, is expected to adopt a business plan that will charge passengers a myriad of fees to compensate for the ultra-low fares.

Billionaire Carlos Slim and leading broadcaster Televisa are joining forces in a new low-cost airline as the government sells off Mexico's largest carriers and opens the industry to competition. Slim's investment unit, Sinca Inbursa, and Televisa said Monday they would each take a 25% stake in Vuela, the new airline. The other partners are El Salvador-based airline Grupo Taca and investment fund Discovery Americas I, in which former Mexican Finance Minister Pedro Aspe plays a leading role.

Once known as an upstart carrier, Southwest Airlines recently launched a new ad campaign that has some airline industry experts wondering if it signals a new direction - and new fees - at the nation's largest domestic airline. The new ads, which began airing during the television broadcast of the NCAA playoffs, don't mention the airline's most popular appeal - that your first two checked bags fly free and you don't pay to change flights. The ads also don't feature funny dialog that slams competitors - a common theme in past Southwest commercials.

Allegiant Air is set to become the second major U.S. airline to charge passengers a fee to bring carry-on luggage on flights. Allegiant — a low-cost airline that flies out of Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas and several Florida cities, among others — will begin collecting a fee of up to $35 per bag Wednesday morning. Andrew Levy, president of the airline's parent company, Allegiant Travel Co. in Las Vegas, announced the new fee in an email to employees Friday, saying the changes are part of "an ongoing effort to develop an innovative, new approach to travel.

When it comes time to trade in your frequent-flier reward points for seats on an airplane, low-cost airlines do the best job of getting you in the air. That was the conclusion of a study released last week by IdeaWorks, a Wisconsin consultant to the airline industry. In March, IdeaWorks submitted nearly 7,000 booking requests through the frequent-flier websites of 23 airlines. Seats were requested for the airline's most popular routes in June through October. The study had a 93.5% success rate of finding available seats on low-cost airlines around the world, including U.S. carriers such as Southwest Airlines, AirTran Airways and JetBlue Airways.

When we got to Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris, an agent eyeballed our bags and said they exceeded the weight limit and that we owed 600 euros (about $800) total. Can this be right?
