The Minnesota Vikings moved to within a governor's signature of getting a new $975-million stadium on Thursday after the state Senate approved a plan that relies heavily on public financing. Gov. Mark Dayton has said he'll sign the measure, meaning the Senate's 36-30 vote was effectively the final barrier for the stadium. The House had passed it overnight. The team chased a new stadium for more than a decade but had little leverage until its lease expired last year on the 30-year-old Metrodome.

Up next for USC VS. LOYOLA MARYMOUNT Saturday, 5 p.m., Galen Center, 710 AM. Loyola Marymount was 3-24 last season but returns its top four scorers, including high scorer Jarred DuBois, who averaged 13.5 points. That has not been much of a benefit during losses to Boise State and Montana. The Lions play host to UC Irvine tonight. -- Pete Thomas

Facing an opponent every bit its equal in talent, the Los Angeles Loyola High boys' volleyball team had to rely on something just as important in the latter stages of Friday night's match: experience. It was that intangible which proved to be the difference as the Cubs won their annual clash of the titans against Southland rival Manhattan Beach Mira Costa, 25-19, 17-25, 25-20, 25-23, in front of a boisterous crowd at Loyola Marymount University's Gersten Pavilion. Next season, UCLA-bound Nick Porterfield and USC signee Alex Slaught will be rivals in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, but right now they are happy to be playing on the same side of the net, and the Cubs' senior outside hitters led the attack with 14 and 13 kills, respectively.

Was it worth it? Loyola Marymount shelled out a five-figure sum to play in the postseason for the first time in 20 years, and its performance might have left some wishing for a refund. The Lions came out jittery in falling behind by 20 points and never recovered during an 86-76 loss to Pacific on Wednesday night at Gersten Pavilion in the first round of the CollegeInsider.com tournament. There was nothing spine-tingling about Loyola Marymount's first postseason game since its run to the NCAA tournament's Elite Eight in 1990.

Loyola Marymount's first foray into college basketball's postseason in two decades is going to cost the Lions. Put the price tag at $31,500. That's how much the school will pay CollegeInsider.com to host Pacific on Wednesday night at 7:30 in the first round of its third-tier tournament. "It's not the NCAA tournament, but it's an opportunity to continue to play and practice," Loyola Marymount Coach Max Good said. "It's a reward for players to play on.... We're not at the point in our program where we can look down at anything."

Swallowed up in the noise and hype of big-time college basketball in our big-time sports metropolis is a delightful gem with a simply perfect name. Meet Max Good. He is the basketball coach at Loyola Marymount. If you have been paying attention to the early-season fortunes of Los Angeles-area Division I basketball teams, you might be inclined, at least at the moment, to rank LMU the region's No. 1. En route to their current 4-2 record, they have beaten two top-25 teams.

St. Louis plays noisy basketball. Shoes squeak because the Billikens are always moving their feet, whether on offense or defense. Players shout. They chatter to each other, call out defenses, bark out what play has been called, warn each other away from screens. The 2,637 who came Sunday to the Anaheim Convention Center for the 76 Classic were rewarded hearing the sounds of a basketball team that has a good plan. St. Louis (6-0) won the championship with an 83-63 win over Oklahoma (4-1)
