NEW YORK - Sherlock Holmes has really been through the wringer lately. In two feature films, Guy Ritchie turned the pipe-smoking detective into a 19th century British butt-kicker who's as likely to corner criminals with his fists as with his brain. An increasingly popular BBC show restores some of the meditative qualities of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original but brings Holmes to modern-day London. Now a new broadcast series, "Elementary," offers perhaps the most fanciful interpretation: Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller)

LONDON — The amazing Olympic run of the Williams sisters continued Sunday when they teamed to win the gold medal in women's doubles. Venus and Serena Williams defeated Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka of the Czech Republic, 6-4, 6-4, in the final. The sisters' victory came a day after Serena had won the singles title, completing her career Golden Slam and, in the minds of many, separating herself from all other tennis players. No one else in the sport's history has won all four major championships and Olympic gold in both singles and doubles.

For six months, it had been an ongoing topic of discussion. But by May of this year it was abundantly clear that the time had come for our 23-year-old son, Flannery, a UCSB graduate in film, to get a place of his own. I live and teach creative writing to college students in Alabama during the academic year. It's not ideal living 2,200 miles from my husband, but it's what we do to make a dent in the $100,000 in college debt we owe for our kids. My husband teaches second grade in LAUSD, and I come home for summers.

As the director of more than 100 episodes of the enduringly classic 1950s sitcom "I Love Lucy," William Asher considered the first episode he directed to be one of his most memorable: Lucy and Ethel working in a chocolate factory. But for Asher, who died Monday at 90, his second "I Love Lucy" episode was even more memorable: He put his job on the line after discovering that Lucille Ball was giving cast members line readings and stage directions behind the scenes. "So I went to her and said, 'Lucy, I know what you're doing.

Doris Singleton, an actress on "I Love Lucy" who played one of Lucy and Ricky Ricardo's neighbors and called her character "Lucy's nemesis," has died. She was 92. Lucy Lawless did it, and she isn't sorry she did it. Of course, the "Spartacus" actress hopes her conviction on trespassing charges won't hurt her career in the future by preventing her from entering countries that don't dig folks with criminal records, but that's almost beside the point. "For the first time in my life, I put my body and reputation on the line to stand up for my beliefs and do the right thing," she told the Associated Press after appearing in court. "I hope I've encouraged other people to do the same.

People Who Eat Darkness The True Story of a Young Woman Who Vanished From the Streets of Tokyo - and the Evil That Swallowed Her Up Richard Lloyd Parry FSG Originals: 464 pp., $16 paper Americans have an advantage in reading "People Who Eat Darkness" - we are less likely to know about Lucie Blackman. The blond Brit was 21 when she disappeared in Japan in 2000; the months-long search for her made headlines in both Japan and England. Unlike readers there, we have an extra level of suspense - we don't know what happened to Lucie - although we will by the middle of this masterful literary true crime story, which earns its comparisons to Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood" and Norman Mailer's "The Executioner's Song.

Lucy, that starlet among ancient human relatives, may have shared the stage with a hominin very different from herself, a newly discovered fossil suggests. Out of the Ethiopian desert, researchers have unearthed a rare, 3.4-million-year-old partial foot that resembles those belonging to Ardipithecus ramidus , a species thought to have roamed East Africa a million years before Lucy and other members of her species, Australopithecus afarensis . The findings, published in Thursday's edition of the journal Nature, provide the first good evidence that another bipedal human relative was still climbing trees at the same time that Lucy and her kind had their feet planted on the ground.

In the opening scene of "Sleeping Beauty," the main character, a Sydney college student played by Emily Browning with pointed blankness, is being intubated, through the mouth, by a researcher in a medical lab. It's one of Lucy's several ways of earning cash, and the clinical atmosphere sets the tone for a film that can be maddeningly opaque, and at times reads like a risible riff on arty soft porn. Yet as repellent as Lucy's story can be, its mystery has a seductive sway, and it does add up to more than the sum of its insistently elliptical parts.

A new musical-comedy tribute to an old favorite — TV's "I Love Lucy" — aims to be more than just another rerun. For starters, says director Rick Sparks, "I Love Lucy Live on Stage" offers the rare chance to see "those beloved black-and-white characters in living color. " The show, which premieres Saturday at the Greenway Court Theatre, also takes audiences out of their living rooms and into the studio to watch the "filming" of two episodes from the classic '50s sitcom, which starred Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, Vivian Vance and William Frawley.
