There came a time in Taunia Rogers' life when a gymnasium stopped being her sanctuary. It was no longer enough for her to crawl back into the warm womb of familiar mats and easy camaraderie of that secure place. It was not enough because her mother was dying and no one, no one, could possibly understand that. No longer did the five-hour, muscle-burning workouts purge Rogers of her anger or her pain.

A sheriff's deputy was convicted Friday of destroying evidence in an internal investigation against him, the district attorney's office said. Lynn Rogers, 31, could receive six months in jail for the misdemeanor. Rogers was a deputy at the Airport Courthouse, and is on unpaid administrative leave. Rogers was being investigated after a female inmate accused him of inappropriate conduct.

Lynn Rogers, who has been the Cal State Fullerton women's gymnastics coach for 24 years, said Monday he is retiring from the university this week, and will focus on developing his private business. Rogers, 49, led Fullerton to the national championship and was named coach of the year in 1979. His teams finished in the top eight nationally 12 other times. He started the Titan program in 1976.

Led by Celeste Delia, who won four of five possible events, Cal State Fullerton beat Stanford, 191.75-186.30, Friday night at Titan Gym to give Lynn Rogers his 200th regular-season gymnastics coaching victory at the school. Delia won the all-around, vault, uneven bars and floor exercise to lead the upset of the Cardinal, ranked 12th nationally, in the season opener for both teams. Delia also set school records for the floor exercise (9.85 points) and all-around (38.95).

Fullerton finished sixth in the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. last season. Rogers, who will start his 15th season this fall, has a 418-80 record at Fullerton. His teams have finished in the top six in the nation 12 times and won the NCAA championship in 1979.

The Titans won their third consecutive Big West Conference championship last weekend at UC Santa Barbara and have qualified for the NCAA West Regional April 8 at Oregon State. "I really didn't think this team would develop as quickly as it has," said Rogers, named conference coach of the year at the meet.

Cal State Fullerton junior gymnast Alexis Lott will miss the 1995-96 season because of a knee injury suffered in practice this week, Coach Lynn Rogers said Friday. Lott, who was co-gymnast of the year in the Big West Conference last season, sustained torn ligaments in her right knee during a workout on the uneven bars. * Taryn Catlin, a senior setter at Sunny Hills, made an oral commitment to attend Purdue, Lancers Coach Ron Kasser said.

Cal State Fullerton's Katy Maty, the Big West Conference gymnast of the year last season, has decided to retire from the sport because of continued back problems, Coach Lynn Rogers said Monday. Rogers said Maty, a junior from Chandler, Ariz., has three bulging discs in her lower back. Maty had not competed in the team's four meets this season.

Former Cal State Fullerton volleyball Coach Jim Huffman's $1.2 million wrongful termination suit against the school went to trial, with jurors hearing attorneys' opening statements and testimony from Titan women's gymnastics Coach Lynn Rogers in Orange County Superior Court.

Julie Knight, former All-American gymnast at Cal State Fullerton, has been hired as an assistant gymnastics coach by the Titans, the school announced Thursday. Knight has been an elite coach at the SCATS Gymnastics Club in Huntington Beach for most of the past 16 years and also a U.S. Olympic Festival coach. Knight was on Fullerton's first gymnastics team in 1976 and was an All-American in all-around, vault and floor exercise.
