Manhattan Inc., a magazine that set New York abuzz but that has never turned a profit, will be bought by Capital Cities/ABC Inc. and merged with M magazine to create a male-oriented business and "lifestyle" monthly, the companies announced Thursday. D. Herbert Lipson, founder and owner of Manhattan Inc., said the editorial staffs will be combined and the new magazine, M Inc., will debut in September.

M Magazine to Fold: Fairchild Publications said it was closing M magazine, a 9-year-old men's fashion and lifestyle monthly, because of the poor market for luxury goods advertising. Fairchild, which publishes the woman's fashion magazine W and 10 other magazines and newspapers, said the November issue of M would be the last. The closing marks the demise of yet another magazine that targeted affluent readers. Earlier this year, Hearst Corp.

In the world of "P.M. Magazine," the San Diego edition is a survivor, a proven ratings warrior. With energetic hosts Pat Brown and Dave Hood leading the way, the show regularly defeats its competition, holding down the key 7 p.m. time slot for KFMB-TV (Channel 8). It even beats the Big Daddy of syndicated television shows, "Wheel of Fortune." "I wish we could do as well in all markets against 'Wheel,' " said Nancy Alspaugh, executive producer in the national offices of "P.M."

Anne Hathaway surprised the fashion world by wearing Prada -- not Valentino -- to the Academy Awards on Sunday. It was a surprise because the actress is personally close to Valentino Garavani, who even designed her wedding gown. What happened? Hathaway's representative has now released a statement explaining that she had planned to wear a Valentino creation to the Oscars, but at the last minute -- well, Saturday night -- discovered it was very similar to a gown someone else planned to wear.

Oscar-winning composer Marvin Hamlisch and journalist Terre Blair will marry on May 29, 1989, the couple has announced. Hamlisch, 44, has won three Oscars--two for "The Way We Were" and one for "The Sting"--a Tony award, four Grammys and a Pulitzer Prize for his music and writing. He will be musical director for next month's Academy Awards telecast. Blair, a former correspondent and producer for "The Today Show," "ABC Wide World of Sports," "P.M.

The Jeffrey Foundation will honor Sybil Brand at a birthday luncheon at 11 a.m. May 8 at the Century Plaza, 2025 Avenue of the Stars, Century City. "This Is Your Life, Sybil Brand" will be filmed with Debbie Maffett and Bob Seagren of television's "P.M. Magazine" as hosts. Several celebrities are expected to attend.
