Mac Bernd, the superintendent of the Newport-Mesa Unified School District, will leave his post to head a Texas school system more than twice as big. Bernd was chosen over eight candidates from Texas, New Mexico and Louisiana to take the helm at the Arlington Independent School District, which serves 52,000 students. He succeeds Arlington's top administrator Lynn Hale, who will retire Dec. 31. "I believe there's an excellent match between their needs and my skills," Bernd said Friday.

Nor do many get to clean up after a $4-million embezzlement and heavy losses in a county bankruptcy. So Newport-Mesa Unified School District would be hard-pressed to find a clone of Mac Bernd, who this month resigned after four years as superintendent to take over the 54,000-student Arlington, Texas, school system.

For the first time in 21 years, a new person will sit in the office of the superintendent in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District on Monday. Cloyde McKinley Bernd, 49, who loves to ride Harley-Davidson motorcycles and goes by the nickname Mac, was hired last month from Little Rock, Ark., to lead the embattled district through some tough educational and budgetary issues. The Newport-Mesa school district is still stinging from the largest embezzlement in the history of California schools.

The Newport-Mesa Unified School District is seeking volunteers for its citizen's advisory committee on surplus property. Supt. Mac Bernd said the district wants the committee to help formulate policies for the use of district-owned property that may not be needed for school purposes. Applications should be submitted by July 22 so that committee members can be selected Aug. 2. Those interested should call the superintendent's office at (714) 760-3500.

James M. Ferryman has been elected by a unanimous vote of his colleagues to serve as president of the Newport-Mesa Unified School District Board of Trustees for the next year. Ferryman, who succeeds Martha Fluor, represents Costa Mesa on the board. He was first elected in 1994. Ferryman said he looks forward to leading the board while it makes some tough decisions, including the hiring of a new superintendent.

Mac Bernd will serve his last day as superintendent of the Newport-Mesa Unified School District on Dec. 19. At its meeting on Tuesday, the board officially accepted Bernd's resignation, which he announced two weeks ago. He has taken a job as the top administrator at Arlington Independent School District in Texas. He begins his new post Jan. 1.

The new superintendent of the San Marcos Unified School District is Cloyde McKinley (Mac) Bernd, 42, currently curriculum and instruction director for the Glendale Union High School District in suburban Phoenix. Bernd will start work Aug. 18 at an annual salary of $65,000. He succeeds William Streshley, who resigned to become superintendent of the Ramon Valley Unified School District near Oakland.
