So now that the runway shows are over, what's the future of L.A. fashion week? "If you build buzz, they will come," said David Caruso, marketing director at IMG. The sports and entertainment marketing firm is planning to produce fashion shows for the first time here in November. As the fall fashion shows continue, this week winding their way to Milan, the final details for next month's runway shows in L.A. are still being ironed out. The most hotly anticipated event is being organized by 7th on Sixth, the same outfit that stages New York's Fashion Week at Bryant Park. "Mercedes-Benz Shows L.A." will take place April 1 through 4 at the Downtown Standard Hotel, with three runways that will cost designers $750 to $3,500 to rent (compared to $20,000 at Bryant Park).

Local designers are deconstructing L.A. style--and nowhere was that more apparent than during fashion week here. In all, more than 24 designers showed their spring and summer 2001 collections. Many presented an aesthetic that refreshingly went beyond the flesh and glam of Hollywood and the surfer looks of California. The L.A. designs were decidedly different from those on view at New York's recent shows, which offered primarily ladylike looks and 1980s chic.

They're still repairing the stiletto divots in the mayor's backyard. But that's what you get when you invite the fashion crowd over for a party. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa opened the back lawn of his official residence in Windsor Square to celebrate the fashion industry in L.A. and Earth Pledge, a group that raises the eco-consciousness of businesses.

What better way to launch a line of party dresses than to throw a party, invite all your model-gorgeous friends and dress them for the event? That's exactly what L.A. stylist and society maven Mary Alice Haney did on Thursday night, when she hosted a dinner and disco party at the Standard Hotel's Mmhmmm Lounge to mark the arrival of her collection on Net-a-Porter  last month. Except, she reported, the line has already nearly sold out on the fashion website. (More stock is coming soon, and you can also purchase the collection at ShopHaney.com .)
