Many Angelenos' place in Los Angeles--their street address--is determined by where they live and work in relation to the historic corner of 1st and Main streets in downtown's Civic Center. First and Main is ground zero for the city's and county's unified house-numbering systems--the manner in which government determines the addresses of large numbers of homes and businesses. Streets are numbered according to their distance from that intersection.

A decade ago, the stretch of downtown L.A.'s Main Street between 4th and 6th streets was a desolate collection of empty buildings and homeless encampments, an area where drug dealing was conducted in the open, and the only longtime residents lived in residential hotels. These days, that stretch resembles a bustling small-town main street. There's the neighborhood bookstore, where an attentive shopkeeper knows her customers by name.

In a move officials say is intended to "upgrade" part of Main Street in downtown Los Angeles, Community Redevelopment Agency commissioners voted Wednesday to pay the Union Rescue Mission $6.5 million to move about five blocks away. The 98-year-old nondenominational Protestant mission, which houses about 800 homeless men each night, is the oldest and largest mission in the downtown area. About 70 years ago, it was evicted from its original site to make way for City Hall and has been at 226 S.

In its heyday, World Famous VIP Records in Long Beach had a full-time disc jockey playing music for customers, and clerks learned their clients' tastes so well they knew what to put on as soon as customers walked in the store. Over the years, VIP became a family owned chain, with 14 locations across Los Angeles County, the Long Beach store eventually emerging as the flagship. Now owned by Kelvin Anderson, VIP in Long Beach midwifed the careers of some of America's best-known hip-hop stars.

Lax-C is a warehouse-style market in downtown Los Angeles where you can buy almost anything required for Asian cooking. Tucked in a corner of this vast space is Lax-C B-B-Q Express, which sells Thai food to go including cooked dishes and a great variety of sweets. One day's selection included tod mun gai--sliced chicken on rice, garnished with cucumber slices and accompanied by a spicy dipping sauce. This is the Thai version of Hainan chicken rice, a Chinese food-stall favorite in Singapore.
