Will somebody come clean about those soap-like bubbles in Malibu's tiny Marie Canyon Creek? A legal battle between an environmental crusader and Pepperdine University is raising questions about a frothy cascade of storm water that periodically spills over a beach lined with celebrity homes and into the Pacific Ocean. Videographer Cary ONeal, who blogs as "Mr. Malibu," insists that the runoff is tainted by a sewage treatment plant that serves the university and a housing tract next door, and that the school should be held to task for it. Pepperdine officials dispute that and have gone to court to prevent ONeal's accusation and home-made videos of the sudsy flow from going viral.

Actor Pierce Brosnan has sold his Malibu beach retreat for $2.6 million. Brosnan and his wife, environmental activist and former broadcast journalist Keely Shaye Smith, put the property on the market at $3.9 million in 2010 while building another house nearby. The gated Mediterranean they sold has separate space for use as an office or media room and sits on more than a quarter of an acre with lawn space and a courtyard fountain. The flower boxes and hydrangea-lined pathways are perhaps a nod to Brosnan's Irish roots.

On vacation, I generally try to ditch the Blackberry and tune out breaking news. But of course I always fail. How am I supposed to read about a state legislator from San Bernardino trying to board a plane to Sacramento with a loaded Colt .45 and not wish I was back at work? How can I enjoy my vacation when I open the paper and read about a fabulous Malibu beach that was donated to the public in 1979 and transferred to county control in 1995 that's still not accessible to beachgoers?
