Since four magnitude 6 earthquakes occurred in a two-day period in the Long Valley caldera bordering Mammoth Mountain in the spring of 1980, there has been concern that future quake swarms might signal an eruption in this volcanically active region. For that reason, geologists have been monitoring the area carefully, checking both seismicity and ground deformation with an array of recording instruments. Since 1989, when a series of deep, long-period quakes rumbled beneath the 11,053-foot mountain itself, attention has refocused from the area east of Mammoth Lakes to the mountain west of town.

WASHINGTON - She was called the "the most famous woman in Los Angeles. " That was how the wife of famed "Pathfinder" John C. Fremont was described in her Los Angeles Times obituary in 1902. Though she is not as well known today, she could be on the way to gaining a higher profile - one more than 12,100 feet high. Legislation to name a mountain peak in Yosemite National Park as Mt. Jessie Benton Fremont is now before Congress. Related: The ultimate guide to Yosemite The measure, a tribute to Jessie Benton Fremont's efforts to preserve the land that would become the park, comes on this year's 150th anniversary of President Lincoln signing the bill granting Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove, a stand of some of the world's largest trees, to the state of California as a public trust.

Glazed with more than three feet of fresh snow, Mammoth Mountain is fully loaded for President's Weekend, with 100% of the terrain open for the first time this year. As an added bonus: Try out the slope course U.S. gold medal snowboarders Sage Kotsenburg and Jamie Anderson ran last month in preparation for the Sochi Olympics. While not exactly the same as it was during the elite competition, the rail sections and jumps at the bottom are still intact. The recent storms are a merciful and well-timed gift to Mammoth in advance of the always-busy mid-winter holiday weekend.  Late last week, Mammoth Lakes got three to four feet of new snow.

What a difference a month makes. Seems like we were just pointing to fall colors in the Eastern Sierra when snow started falling last month at Squaw Valley, Mammoth and Heavenly. None of those California ski resorts is yet open, unlike Colorado's Loveland Ski Resort, which claimed it was the first in that state to open, with an 18-inch base, on Oct. 24. Although Mammoth Mountain isn't scheduled to open until Nov. 11, it's already offering a cool winter deal: Stay three nights and receive a $100 resort credit.

Officials at Mammoth Mountain were a little worried late last week when the forecast called for a big storm with temperatures on the warm side, which would have meant rain -- at least on the lower slopes. But the weather turned cold enough during the weekend so the precipitation that fell was snow, lots and lots of snow. By Monday, between 4 and 6 feet of the white stuff had landed on this big Eastern Sierra Nevada resort. The base is now an impressive 50 to 70 inches.   As a result, all of Mammoth's terrain, 28 lifts and the Canyon and Eagle Lodges will be open Friday morning.

Yes, the mountains of Southern California got a little snow , but the state's biggest snow hill, Mammoth Mountain, is still feeling pretty bony. Fun, but as much fun as man-made snow can be. And we have that lil' La Niña to blame. But wait, last year was also a La Niña year, and Mammoth got blasted with more than 668 inches of snow, including epic pre-Christmas dumps that made for a great holiday season. This year, according to the Mammoth Mountain website, we're sitting at 49 inches.

It's 15 degrees Fahrenheit outside, with a little lazy swirl of snow in the night sky, but Hyde Lounge at Mammoth Mountain is starting to overheat. Never mind that almost 10 feet of snow has fallen on the remote Sierra ski town in the previous week; at 10 p.m. on a Saturday, a well-heeled crowd begins pushing through the door of the new club, packing the place to capacity with a clientele that Mammoth has never adequately served before: the nightclubbers. Mammoth finally has an honest-to-God dance club, and there are people there whom you'd never see otherwise.

If snow tops your New Year's Eve wish list, head out to one of California's ski resorts. There's no guarantee it'll be snowing Tuesday at Bear Mountain, the Lake Tahoe resorts or Mammoth Mountain, but there should be enough white stuff on the ground to make for a cool welcome to 2014. Snow Summit/Bear Mountain in Big Bear Lake: The Torchlight Parade ignites a man-made mountain glow as a few hundred resort workers carry torch lights while skiing and snowboarding down the slopes.

Lift tickets today (Friday) will be only $10, and kids 12 and younger ski free all season long. About half the mountain is expected to be in play for the opening weekend. Because of lower terrain, June has not enjoyed the same productive storms that have blanketed Mammoth Mountain , which is reporting a base depth of 25 inches. June is reporting a 6-18-inch base.

June's lifts will welcome skiers and snowboarders beginning mid-December 2013, officials say. “Next winter we look forward to bringing skiers and snowboarders a great on-mountain experience while also planning for June's future, including the possibility of a new lift and enhanced snowmaking,” June Mountain general manager Carl Williams said in a release.
