Brandon Rios says he learned all he needs to know about his opponent Mike Alvarado by battling him through seven vicious rounds in October. "I saw in his eyes after I hurt him with a body shot in the fifth round, I knew I would finish him and that he knew he couldn't hurt me," Rios said, who won their junior-welterweight bout by seventh-round technical knockout. It's why Oxnard's Rios (31-0-1, 23 knockouts) won't change anything about his approach in Saturday's rematch with Alvarado.

If all goes as planned Saturday night, Juan Manuel Marquez, the veteran technician, and Brandon Rios, the young aggressor, will clear their final hurdles to a July 14 junior-welterweight showdown at Cowboys Stadium outside Dallas. "That's what I'd like to do," fight promoter Bob Arum said Friday. "We have to discuss terms with both, they both have to win, nothing is finalized, but it'd be a great fight. If the new Cirque du Soleil tribute to Michael Jackson, "Immortal," confirms one thing, it's that the King of Pop's presence, even in death, sure can rile up a crowd. Every time the late singer's image popped on-screen during the show's Las Vegas premiere on Saturday night, whether as a tyke with a golden voice as part of the Jackson 5 or as a Thriller with a sequined glove and a miraculous body for dance, the sold-out venue erupted, if only for a snapshot moment. But clips of Jackson being MJ, however magnetic, can't sustain an hour-and-a-half show dedicated to his music, nor can a dancing Bubbles the chimpanzee, big-Afroed J5 impersonators, a baffling mid-show cello solo, a sexy contortionist act atop a children's book, groups of synchronized mummies in hoop skirts and, most curiously, a life-sized dancing glove that looked more like a half-dead starfish.

Nick Diaz, reinstated to the Ultimate Fighting Championship main event Saturday in Las Vegas, will need to defeat hard-hitting Carlos Condit to attain the title he wants most of all. Diaz blew a prior chance to fight UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre after missing a publicity tour to promote the bout. UFC President Dana White replaced Diaz with Condit. Then, St-Pierre tore knee ligaments. He is expected to be sidelined until the early fall. So Stockton's Diaz was summoned back to face Albuquerque's Condit for the UFC's interim welterweight title in the bout at Mandalay Bay Events Center.
