In an interview with Katie Couric on Thursday, a few voicemails that Manti Te'o's "girlfriend" left him were played on the air. The voice of Kekua reportedly belongs to Ronaiah Tuiasosopo , who apparently disguised his voice. After the first message was played, Te'o said: "It sounds like a girl, doesn't it?" "It does," Couric said. Tuiasosopo apparently masterminded the hoax against Te'o by creating a fake online profile for a made-up woman named Kekua. Tuiasosopo then apparently talked to Te'o over the phone while pretending to be Kekua.

Houston Texans running back Cierre Wood, who played at Notre Dame alongside Manti Te'o, has been answering a lot of questions about his former teammate this week because the Texans are playing Te'o and the San Diego Chargers in the season opener for both teams Monday. And apparently, most of the questions revolve around Te'o's fake girlfriend, Lennay Kekua, and not on how well Te'o plays. “They really don't ask me about how he plays. His tape speaks for itself. I really don't get questions on his athletic abilities,” Wood told KHOU-TV in Houston . “More of the questions are on the things that surrounded him the most, the main reason he was in the limelight.” The big question: Did Wood ever have any contact with Kekua?

Some of the key participants in the alleged Notre Dame star Manti Te'o-dead girlfriend hoax, have ties right here in the Southland. Lennay Kekua, Te'o's girlfriend, who apparently never existed, supposedly lived in Carson. Deadspin.com, which broke the girlfriend hoax story, first became suspicious when they called several mortuaries in and around the Carson area and dicsovered none of them had heard of Kekua. “We called all the mortuaries in Carson and they had no information,” said Deadspin.com editor Timothy Burke in an interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper.

What I remember most about last season's BCS title game was fixing binoculars on Alabama and Notre Dame during pregame warmups and going "uh-oh. " I had seen both schools separately in person but not together on the same field The squad dressed in white and crimson looked like an NFL team. I started typing as fast as Alabama was scoring and completed my game story by the third quarter needing only the final score: 42-14. It didn't take away Notre Dame's great season, but it did bring some more things into focus.

Manti Te'o gave the 40-yard dash another try after clocking a less-than-impressive time of 4.82 at the NFL combine. At Notre Dame's pro day Tuesday, Te'o ran the sprint in 4.69 seconds, according to Notre Dame's unofficial clock. That means Te'o shaved off about one-tenth of a second from his initial time. It might not be a drastic improvement, but it's definitely a step in the right direction.  "I felt good. I'm at home now," Te'o told reporters. "I was very pleased with how I performed.

Katie Couric went there. During her televised interview with Manti Te'o over the infamous girlfriend hoax, she asked whether the All-American linebacker from Notre Dame was gay. "Are you gay?” Couric asked during the interview that was televised Thursday on her nationally syndicated television show. ”No, far from it, far from it,” Te'o replied with an undertone of nervous laughter. Te'o, who led Notre Dame to the BCS national championship game and was the runner-up in voting for the Heisman Trophy as college football's best player, was duped into believing he had a loving online relationship with a girl named Lennay Kekua.

This week, Notre Dame football player Manti Te'o sat down for his first on-camera interview to discuss the controversy surrounding his girlfriend hoax. But he wasn't sitting across from Oprah Winfrey, the current queen of the sports world exclusive. He was talking to Katie Couric. So how did Couric manage to beat out Winfrey for the juicy get? After all, Winfrey just snagged international coverage and a reported audience of 28 million worldwide for her exclusive two-part sit-down with disgraced cycling star Lance Armstrong.

Notre Dame Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick held a news conference about the Manti Te'o controversy Wednesday night. You can watch the entire news conference above. Some highlights: Question: You said this is an online relationship, yet Manti has talked about speaking with a person he thought was Lennay. Did a person, in effect, take her position and talk to Manti as if she were his girlfriend? Swarbrick: Yeah, online and telephonic. There were lengthy, long telephone conversations.

Well, that didn't take long. After news broke Wednesday that Manti Te'o's supposed girlfriend, Lennay Kekua, never existed, an Internet meme making fun of Te'o -- called #Teoing -- popped up. People are posting various photos to the Tumblr account to joke about the false relationship. There's a photo of a man with his arm wrapped around the air with the caption: "Me and my hottie girlfriend. " Another photo shows a dog talking on the phone with the caption: "Hello Yes, this is Lennay Kekua.

Manti Te'o is finally ready to talk, on camera, about his fake girlfriend. And it won't be with Oprah. It will be with Katie Couric. The Notre Dame linebacker will be interviewed along with his parents in a segment that will be shown on Couric's show, "Katie," on Thursday, according to the show's website . Te'o, who was a Heisman Trophy finalist and led his team to the BCS title game, became a sensation last week when it was revealed that...

SAN DIEGO  - Two young players. Two sides of the football. Two corners of the country. One overriding question: Is there a place for each of them in the NFL? On the same day quarterback Tim Tebow made his debut with the New England Patriots, San Diego's Manti Te'o stepped to the lectern Tuesday, the first day of mini-camp, and spoke to reporters for the first time in weeks. The Chargers' new regime - led by Coach Mike McCoy and General Manager Tom Telesco - had made Te'o off limits to the media, reasoning the controversial second-round pick would be best served by quietly burying his nose in the playbook.

SAN DIEGO -  Even though he has his gaze set on his future with the San Diego Chargers, Manti Te'o has taken a backward glance - but only one - at Notre Dame's 42-14 loss to Alabama in the national championship game. “Honestly, I've only gone back [and watched it] once,” Te'o said Tuesday at Chargers minicamp, in his first public comments since May 10. “That kind of stuff you don't want to see too much. But definitely you learn more from your losses than you do from your wins.

Manti Te'o is moving past the controversy that once seemed to taint his draft stock and is now focusing on stopping the run or getting to the quarterback for the San Diego Chargers. Te'o, who signed a four-year deal with the Chargers on Thursday, participated in his first day of rookie camp on Friday in San Diego. “I'm here to play football,” the linebacker said, according to the Associated Press. “I'm not focusing on what is going on on the outside. I'm worried about what we're doing here in San Diego and I'm looking forward to when the veterans come in on Monday.” As a senior at Notre Dame, Te'o was a finalist for the Hesiman Trophy while intercepting seven passes -- the most by a major college linebacker in a single season since 2001 -- and led the Fighting Irish with 113 tackles en route to a No. 1 national ranking and Bowl Championship Series national-title game appearance against the Alabama Crimson Tide.

The San Diego Chargers don't typically get a big reaction from the crowd at Radio City Music Hall, but there was a roar - Cheers? Boos? - when the team selected controversial Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o with the sixth pick of the second round. The Chargers are in need of linebackers, both inside and outside, and Te'o was runner-up to last year's Heisman Trophy. He had a horrible national championship game against Alabama, though, turned in slow times at the combine and was dogged by the fake-dead-girlfriend scandal.

The names of the draft prospects that will be at Radio City Music Hall on April 25 for the 2013 NFL draft have been announced, but not on the list are former USC quarterback Matt Barkley and former Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o. The 23 players who have accepted invitations from the NFL will wait in the green room until their name is called by Commissioner Roger Goodell. But there's no guarantee that'll happen the first night -- last year six players were still in the green room after the first round.

Ohio State's Thad Matta and Arizona's Sean Miller coached together at Miami, Ohio and Xavier. On Thursday, the good friends will square off in the NCAA West Regional semifinal at Staples Center. "I wouldn't be here today without him," Miller said. In 2007, Matta's Ohio State team came back to defeat Miller's Xavier team, 78-71, in an NCAA tournament second-round game. Ohio State went on to advance to the championship game, where it lost to Florida. "It worked out real well for one of us," Miller said, "and not very well for me. " Matta recalled the night Miller called him as he was trying to decide whether to leave Xavier and accept an offer from Arizona.

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Manti Te'o is not alone. Just ask Michael Roth , one of the Angels' most decorated pitching prospects. Caught up in a phony relationship? Happened to him too. Roth started the championship game of the College World Series in each of the last three years, with his South Carolina team winning in 2010 and 2011 before losing last year. After the Gamecocks won the 2010 title, Roth traveled to Maine to pitch in a summer league, where he got an unsolicited text message from an unfamiliar number.
