As a kid growing up in Ormond Beach, Fla., a few miles from Daytona International Speedway, Alan Gustafson idolized NASCAR driver Mark Martin, whose autographed memorabilia cards hung in Gustafson's bedroom. Now, Gustafson is Martin's crew chief as the 50-year-old driver takes one more stab at winning his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship, which would be Gustafson's first as well.

It was a baptism by water for new Fullerton Fire Chief Marc Martin. About 10 Fullerton firefighters gathered Monday morning to turn a fire truck hose, a garden hose and two buckets of water on their new chief at the city's Fire Department headquarters in celebration of his appointment last Tuesday to the head post. "I'm a little wetter than I expected," said a thoroughly soaked Martin. "It's cold, I didn't realize it would be this cold."

Subscribers to the city's paramedic service will soon be paying $4 more in annual fees. City Council members unanimously decided this week to increase the $20 annual fee to generate approximately $50,000. The fee increase is effective May 1. Subscribers who use paramedic services do not pay the $175 or $275 fee billed to non-subscribers each time they call for emergency aid, city officials said.

The Jan. 3 letters from Marc Martin, Santa Ana fire chief, and the parents from Village View Elementary School seem to share a common theme, that adults can't be trusted to make their own decisions. The fact that some people will use fireworks or alcohol in an irresponsible manner should not put them off-limits to everyone. People have to take personal responsibility for their own choices. And the Puritanical view that since alcohol is a drug it's bad is absurd. Aspirin is a drug; penicillin is a drug; used properly, they have many benefits.

Marc Martin, division chief of operations at the department, will take over as interim chief on Monday, the same day Coleman will begin in his new post in Sacramento. "This Fire Department is a good department," said Coleman, who had held the top post there since 1985. "I don't feel like I am letting go of the reins.

A two-alarm fire burned a portion of a fourth-floor chemistry lab at Cal State Fullerton this morning but caused no injuries, officials said. The small blaze presented a potentially greater danger because of various unknown chemicals and natural flammable gases contained in the room, Fullerton Fire Chief Marc Martin said. The Orange County Fire Department's hazardous materials team was called to assist. Martin was uncertain about how the fire began but he said it was confined to one corner of the lab and posed no danger to anyone outside the building.
