One might think that writer-director Maria Maggenti set out to portray lesbians in a positive light with her feature film debut, "The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love." You know, right the wrongs of society, stand on her pedestal, that sort of thing. But this was hardly the case. "All I wanted to do was make a movie about falling in love," said Maggenti, 31. "But I couldn't do it with a boy-girl story, because that's not my experience."

THE first film by Maria Maggenti, "The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love," turned the writer-director's own blushing, youthful romantic interlude into a tender, comedic tale. With her second feature, "Puccini for Beginners," Maggenti again draws from the well of her own relationship travails. Around the time of production of "Two Girls in Love," Maggenti, who then identified as lesbian, found herself in love with a man.

The experience of first love is a movie perennial but rarely is it believably rendered. The best thing going for "The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love"--an amateurish, sweet, little piddle of a movie--is that it captures a bit of the freshness, and the awkwardness, of the moment. Partly this is because writer-director Maria Maggenti seems to be carrying on her own first love with movies.

"The Love Letter" is a romantic comedy of much charm and wisdom, set in a storybook New England village, that takes a bemused look at the capriciousness of fate in determining the course of our lives. Kate Capshaw, Blythe Danner, Ellen DeGeneres, Geraldine McEwan, Julianne Nicholson, Tom Everett Scott, Tom Selleck and Gloria Stuart form a sterling ensemble cast that glows under the breezy yet tart direction of Peter Ho-Sun Chan, a top Hong Kong director making his Hollywood debut.

"Harry Potter" star Daniel Radcliffe has received critical acclaim for his appearance on the London stage in the revival of Peter Shaffer's drama "Equus" and was a hoot as a sendup of himself on an episode of HBO's "Extras." But his pal Rupert Grint, the lanky redhead who plays Ron Weasley in the "Potter" films, hasn't had such success in his non-wizarding roles.

Bisexuality certainly increases the geometric possibilities of the romantic comedy, completing its triangles and allowing for quadrangles and other, more amorphous layers of amorous involvement. The primary vertex of "Puccini for Beginners," writer-director Maria Maggenti's pleasant comedic romp, is Allegra, an opera-loving writer played by Elizabeth Reaser.

As someone who is writing a book on female directors in the "New Hollywood," I wanted to point out a disturbing pattern I have noticed in your reviews of this important new body of cinema. I'm writing less to quarrel with judgments about whether a given film is "good" or "bad" than to protest the terms used to dismiss these films.

So "Monte Carlo" turns out to be a lot easier to take than both "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" and "Larry Crowne. " You never know. Here's the sort of hardened show business veteran we have in Selena Gomez, who spent two seasons way back in her preteens on "Barney & Friends. " We have the star of Disney Channel's "Wizards of Waverly Place. " We have the star of Disney's TV movie "Princess Protection Program. " We have a hard-working vocalist, whose first album came out in 2009.

Some executives call it the arrival of "gaysploitation," 25 years after a comparable low-budget movement presaged the birth of mainstream African American films. Hollywood observers say it's a classic case of successful niche marketing--the product being movies, the niche being the millions of gays and lesbians, many of whom are concentrated in major cities and have ample money to spend on entertainment to their liking.
