We, the Green Party of California, would like to go on record as enthusiastically seconding Supervisor Maria VanderKolk's proposal for campaign donation limits for candidates running in county elections. The Ventura County Board of Supervisors should welcome the opportunity to become true representatives of each of their constituents and cast off even the appearance of special influence upon their judgments. Bravo to Supervisor Maria VanderKolk. She fought for and won more than 10,000 acres of public open space--some of the most beautiful, pristine mountain and canyon areas we have left--with the commitment, vision and courage of a true leader. She deserves all of our thanks for staying focused on the big picture and relentlessly pursuing the end result. TONY WIENER Calabasas

The Jan. 22 story concerning the purported support of a half-cent sales tax ballot measure by Ventura County Supervisors John Flynn and Maria VanderKolk is a misstatement of fact or a misunderstanding. Supervisors Flynn and VanderKolk have both stated that they support the concept of the aerial rail system from Los Angeles to Ventura County. Supervisor Flynn and Supervisor VanderKolk's administrative assistant, Russ Baggerly, were asked by the reporter how we might pay for such a project.

Ventura County Sheriff Larry Carpenter has endorsed county supervisor candidate Frank Schillo. Schillo, a Thousand Oaks councilman, is running against attorney Trudi Loh for the 2nd Supervisorial District seat being vacated by Maria VanderKolk. The district covers most of the Conejo Valley and Port Hueneme. Carpenter said Schillo, who is also supported by the county's Deputy Sheriffs Assn., has had a solid working relationship with law enforcement for years.
