Brian Huskey will be L.A.'s lone hopeful when the new season of Bravo's "Top Chef" premieres on Wednesday. The Pasadena native, who started his career at the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco, decided to take a culinary journey around the world after he finished his training. During his travels, he learned to incorporate Asian, French and Peruvian influences into his food. He eventually returned to L.A. and landed a job with Ricardo Zarate. Huskey helped Zarate open Picca and Mo-Chica and currently works as a saucier at Paiche.

It's not surprising that the Annenberg Foundation's plans for an expansive interpretive center in the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve has stirred controversy. The cherished 640-acre reserve that stretches from Westchester to Marina del Rey has passionate advocates who often disagree on the best course for its restoration. One element of the Annenberg plan that has come under fire is an animal adoption and care facility. That would be a welcome service in almost any other location in the Los Angeles area, but it doesn't fit into a preservation scheme for Ballona and should not be part of a final design plan.

A group of girls who spent Tuesday tanning beachside in Marina del Rey assumed the big, snazzy boat they saw must belong to the Coast Guard. A man in a wetsuit guessed the tiered, navy-and-white vessel was a cruise ship - like the one he'd board in a few weeks for his honeymoon. And a guy who sells binoculars from Venice Pier said he'd seen it around for a couple weeks and that it belonged to "some real rich Russian dude. " Longer than a football field and topped with a gaggle of gadgets that looks like a Christmas tree without leaves, the fancy boat moored off Marina del Rey still befuddles some vacationers.

Los Angeles Councilman Mike Bonin, who represents much of the Westside, proposed Tuesday that the Marina Freeway be given a new name: the Ballona Freeway. "Ballona Creek is an important natural resource in the Los Angeles urban environment," Bonin said in his resolution. "Renaming [the freeway] ... would allow people to connect the natural beauty around them with the name 'Ballona.'" A mere 1.5 miles or so long, the Marina Freeway is the shortest in L.A. County. It was envisioned as the Slauson Freeway, running through southern L.A. County and northern Orange County.

WASHINGTON - Three Somali pirates were sentenced to life in prison Friday for the shooting deaths of four Americans, including a Marina del Rey couple, in a 2011 hijacking off the coast of East Africa. A federal jury in Norfolk, Va., decided not to impose the death penalty on Ahmed Muse Salad, Abukar Osman Beyle and Shani Nurani Shiekh Abrar after they each were convicted last month on 26 counts including piracy and murder. The piracy convictions carry a mandatory life sentence.

Furniture maker Cliff Spencer's workshop in Marina del Rey is a long way from where Paul Vander Werf lives near Trona, northeast of Ridgecrest, Calif. In Trona, the area averages fewer than 4 inches of rain a year. The topsoil is high desert hard pan that bakes in summer and freezes in winter. When filmmakers want a location to convey a world without water, they go to Trona. Vander Werf moved to the high desert after 10 years in rainy Hawaii, so he wanted solutions to the difficult growing climate.

A luxury Marina del Rey apartment complex and boat anchorage has sold for $225 million in one of the largest real estate deals of the year in Southern California. The Esprit, a 437-unit complex on a finger of land in the marina nearly surrounded by seawater, was purchased by real estate investment firms Capri Capital Partners and Kennedy Wilson from a partnership led by former Los Angeles City Councilwoman Cindy Miscikowski. Miscikowski is the widow of developer Douglas R. Ring, who was one of Marina del Rey's largest property leaseholders and apartment owners.
