The next president of the University of California will be showing up for work earlier than expected. When he was hired last week by UC regents, Mark G. Yudof said he expected to leave his current post as chancellor of the University of Texas system and start at the UC office in Oakland by summer's end. On the day a new UC system president took office, the second-in-command of the 10-campus university resigned. Wyatt R. Hume, UC provost and executive vice president for academic and health affairs, said Monday he will leave his position by September but has no specific future plans. Hume's move came as Mark G. Yudof, former chancellor of the University of Texas system, formally became president of the University of California system. Hume, 63, a former UCLA administrator, also had served since August as the UC system's chief operating officer.
