The fourth-degree felony sexual-abuse charge against former Kings assistant coach Mark Hardy was reduced to a misdemeanor, and a date of Oct. 12 was set for a non-jury trial, his attorney, Craig Renetzky , said. Hardy was charged after a complaint filed by a family member on May 21. He entered a rehabilitation facility shortly afterward. He was arraigned in District of Columbia Superior Court, which had received and granted a motion to reduce the charge to a misdemeanor.

Before last year, Texas A&M had never won an NCAA team title. Now, the Aggies can boast consecutive championships for their men and women. The men wrapped up the NCAA outdoor track and field championships Saturday at Eugene, Ore., with a crucial victory in the 1,600-meter relay and held off Florida to repeat, while the women were boosted by a 1-2 finish in the 200 meters. Texas A&M had never won a team title before last year's championships in Fayetteville, Ark. It was the first school since 1990 to win both outdoor championships.

Mark Hardy, a former Kings defenseman and current assistant coach, was arrested early Friday and charged with felony fourth-degree sexual abuse after a complaint by a family member at a hotel in Washington. Hardy, a Manhattan Beach resident, was taken into custody and appeared before a judge Friday afternoon in the District of Columbia Superior Court. The 51-year-old was released with conditions, including the surrender of his passport and a prohibition against having any physical, verbal or electronic contact with the family member.

Sean Avery's brief and volatile career with the Kings came to an end after an argument with assistant coach Mark Hardy during practice Wednesday, a source with the team said. Avery met with General Manager Dave Taylor and interim Coach John Torchetti after practice and then did not travel with the team to Phoenix, where the Kings play the Coyotes tonight.

Mark Hardy has professed an ambition to become an NHL head coach, and he will take a step in that direction today when he is announced as a King assistant. "I'm very happy," said Hardy, who agreed to a three-year contract with the Kings. "I've been wanting to go up in the hockey world, and at this point of my career, this is great." With 53 goals and 250 assists for 303 points, Hardy held all of the Kings' records for scoring by a defenseman until they were broken last season by Rob Blake.
