Martin Sheen was a struggling 21-year-old stage actor when his first son Emilio was born. Sheen, seventh of 10 children in a family that knew him as Ramon Antonio Gerardo Estevez instead of his stage name, was more accustomed to having siblings than being a father. He felt more like a brother to Emilio, and that dynamic has defined their relationship to this day. In their new memoir, "Along the Way: The Journey of a Father and Son," the two examine the nature of their relationship and the ways it formed and has informed both of their lives.

The Republican National Committee's Spring gathering is taking place this week at Loews Hollywood. That is not Hollywood, Fla., or Hollywood, S.C., or Hollywood, Ala. - all real towns in really red states - but Hollywood, Calif., the place where Sean Penn, Ben Affleck, Alec Baldwin, Susan Sarandon, Barbra Streisand, Jane Fonda, Martin Sheen, George Clooney and the rest of the entertainment industry's liberal horde earn their keep. Like Nixon going to China, the Republicans have entered hostile territory.

Charlie Sheen was a swirl of outrageous behavior during the public meltdown that led to his ouster from CBS' "Two and a Half Men. " But in his appearance at FX's Television Critics' Assn. panel on Saturday, Sheen was more mild than wild. The most outrageous thing about him was his wardrobe. In what may have been a TCA press tour first, Sheen wore plaid shorts and no socks as he sat alongside his costars of "Anger Management" and the show's executive producer, Bruce Helford. And instead of brash and outlandish outbursts, Sheen seemed subdued and almost a bit shy and uncomfortable.

A man many Americans still think of longingly as President Josiah Bartlet is waiting for a light to change at the intersection of Washington Boulevard and Hughes Avenue in Culver City. He is on foot and in conversation with a companion, on his way to Saturday evening mass, but when he sees the people in a car parked at the light waving through the windshield at him, he turns and waves back, offering them a glimpse of his open face and very good set of teeth before hurrying into the crosswalk.

Actor Martin Sheen and three others were arrested Wednesday morning after they splashed what appeared to be blood on the front of the downtown Federal Building in the latest of a series of demonstrations there to protest U.S. policies in El Salvador. "This is the blood of the innocent!" activist Valerie Sklarevsky shouted as she knelt on the front steps to pour the scarlet fluid across her white dress and onto the pavement in front of her. "Stop the war!" she cried. "Stop the killing!

Hollywood actor and activist Martin Sheen, whose famous son survived a drug and alcohol overdose more than two years ago, came to Ventura County on Saturday to thank the people who help make recovery possible. Sheen, who gave up drinking more than a decade ago, was one of several speakers at a party hosted by Vista del Mar, a Ventura hospital that treats chemical dependency and behavioral and psychiatric disorders.

Actor Martin Sheen is sitting in the back seat of a rental car and telling a favorite story. It's about the donkey. "A guy buys a donkey. He's told it'll do anything and he gets it home and the donkey just sits there. The guy orders it to do all kinds of things and it does nothing. So he calls up the guy he bought the donkey from. "The guy says, 'He won't do anything, huh?' 'No.' 'Well, I'll be right over.' "He comes over and bashes the donkey between the eyes with a ball bat.

On Mother's Day, Martin Sheen was arrested for the 16th time for civil disobedience: for demonstrating in good causes. The site, again, was the gate to the underground nuclear test site in Nevada, and Sheen's colleagues in protest included Sean Penn's mother, Eileen, and actor-director Matt Clark. At breakfast in Santa Monica a few days after the most recent pinch, Sheen, who has been arrested in several locales, said he is frequently asked what it's like to be arrested.

Charlie Sheen's "Anger Management" has managed a major renewal. The FX comedy starring the fired star of "Two and a Half Men" has received a 90-episode order from the cable network. The order came as part of the original deal, contingent on the show's ability to generate a designated viewership level over eight of its first 10 episodes. The series, which features Sheen as a former athlete who becomes a therapist for a group of eccentric patients, will begin production of new episodes in September and will return to the network in January.

The order came as part of the original deal for the comedy to generate a designated viewership level over the airing of eight of its first 10 episodes. Said Chuck Saftler, executive vice president of FX Networks: "We set a very high ratings bar that included some additional hurdles for 'Anger Management' to ear its back-90 order and exceeded those metrics.

“The West Wing” hasn't aired a new episode in years, but actor Martin Sheen still delivers that TV president's punch in a new ad against the GOP's plans to change Medicare. The Democratic-run effort is part of the budget battle playing out in Congress this week - and the campaign trail in the months to come - as the House GOP prepares to double-down on a proposal to dramatically alter the health program from seniors. “What is their goal?” asks Sheen, speaking intently into the camera.

It's one thing to put these debates between Al Gore and George W. Bush on TV as a public service for viewers who would otherwise be forced to undergo surgery without an anesthetic. But it's quite another to preempt "West Wing" to do it. Why would anybody want to see Gore and Bush clumsily trying to act presidential, when they can see Martin Sheen elegantly succeeding? And speaking of anesthetic, what sort of megadose was Al Gore on at the debate last Wednesday night?

Borrowing from "The Wizard of Oz," Emilio Estevez sets a ragtag quartet of seekers on a long trek in his new film, "The Way. " Their Yellow Brick Road is the Way of St. James, or El Camino de Santiago, one of Western Europe's most famous Christian pilgrimage routes. The gentle drama offers an intriguing look at the contemporary version of an ancient ritual, and is anchored by the on-screen work of the writer-director's father, Martin Sheen. But Estevez doesn't push far enough, opting to focus on generic lessons in camaraderie and the primacy of the moment.
