Like many storied rivalries from the past, the careers of Peyton Manning and Tom Brady will be forever linked. Although Brady is 10-4 in games against Manning's teams - Indianapolis and Denver - since the 2004 playoffs they have split four decisions. Brady is ahead, 2-1, in the playoffs, but they've split two AFC championship games. Sunday's conference title game will be the so-called “rubber match.” Some of the other great one-on-one sports rivalries: Martina Navratilova vs. Chris Evert: Two of the greatest women's tennis players ever played each other 80 times from 1973-88.

Martina Navratilova's wayward pup, which was AWOL since last Friday morning, has been found. The 2 1/2-year-old Shiba named Yonni was the subject of one of the most intense dog hunts ever mounted in tennis history. Navratilova had brought four of her dogs to the Southland for the Virginia Slims of Los Angeles tournament, which she won Sunday. She had been agonizing over the escape of her dog from the backyard of a friend's home in Sherman Oaks.

Outside, it's 90 degrees in the shade of a low-slung stretch limo but inside Martina Navratilova, bathed in lights and queen-beeing in a swarm of drones, is cool. They have come to touch the hem of her garment or some such, to get an autograph, to bathe in some of Navratilova's strength or integrity, or who knows what. They have come to the L.A. Convention Center, which is playing host to the National Cable Television Assn.

For years, people have been wondering who is going to fill Martina Navratilova's shoes. The answer was quite simple, really. Just find a 19-year-old Australian ranked 176th in the world and put her in a pair of Martina's size 8 1/2 men's shoes, then see what happens. Kristine Radford, playing in a pair of shoes given to her by Navratilova, had the No. 2 player in the world quaking in her shoes for a while Friday in their second-round Wimbledon match.

For one championship-winning team owner from Boston, the name Jerry Buss conjures memories of two sports superstars whose rivalry from opposite coasts defined an era. Magic vs. Bird? No, Chrissy vs. Martina. The man from Boston is Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots, whose first foray into professional sports was as owner of the Boston Lobsters of World Team Tennis from 1975-78. Kraft signed Martina Navratilova after she defected from Czechoslovakia, and after Buss, then owner of the Los Angeles Strings, had made a splash by signing Chris Evert.

What is it about athletes and "Dancing with the Stars?" In the season premiere Monday night, Green Bay Packers receiver Donald Driver joined a long list of athletes who made themselves the immediate favorite to win the competition with a sensational first dance. Driver and his partner, Peta Murgatroyd, danced a cha cha Monday night that, while technically not the best, had the crowd on its feet for a standing ovation when the dance was over. Driver's smile and charisma overpowered any technical problems as even the judges were impressed with his style.

Martina Navratilova has reached the summit of her sport 59 times. That represents 18 Grand Slam event titles in singles, 31 in women's doubles and 10 in mixed doubles. But last week, she found a mountain tougher than Steffi Graf's forehand or Billie Jean King's slice serve. It stands 19,341 feet and is named Kilimanjaro. "I had no pain," she said Sunday, "but I had to retire from my match. " She was speaking by telephone to a handful of reporters around the world. She said she was sitting in the garden at a friend's home in the Nairobi, Kenya, suburb of Karen.
