An official team of Lutheran and Roman Catholic scholars says it is working toward agreements on the role of Mary and the saints in Christian faith. A key issue of the Protestant Reformation was Roman Catholic belief in prayers "invoking the intercession" of Mary and the saints. Protestants contended that this obscured the primacy of Christ as mediator for humanity. At a meeting here, members of the Lutheran-Catholic dialogue team said they expect to publish their conclusions in 1989.

Ten summers ago, six Croatian youths in the Yugoslavian countryside said they had visions of the Virgin Mary and received messages from her. As the Madonna's purported messages continued, often daily, millions of Catholic tourists flocked to the village of Medjugorje, making it a rival of the famous Roman Catholic pilgrimage sites of Lourdes and Fatima. But things have been going badly lately for Mary of Medjugorje (pronounced Meh-ju-gor-yay).

Mary's Hour, a devotional service held annually by the Los Angeles Roman Catholic Archdiocese until it was ended 19 years ago, had some unexpected sights at its recent revival at the Hollywood Bowl. A banner critical of the traditional Catholic adoration of the mother of Jesus was unfurled above the stage, but when it was removed, the nearly 8,000 people attending the Sunday afternoon service interrupted the first reading in the program with cheers and applause.
