One of the biggest mysteries this NFL season is what type of offense first-year Philadelphia Eagles Coach Chip Kelly will run. Now we have a bit of a hint. Kelly named Michael Vick the Eagles' starting quarterback Tuesday, giving him the nod over Nick Foles and dark-horse rookie Matt Barkley. The coach had been expected to announce a starter for the exhibition game against Jacksonville, but instead named Vick the permanent No. 1 quarterback. “It's not a one-game trial basis,” Kelly said, according to USA Today.

Legendary L.A. Rams and Washington Redskins coach George Allen loved to play veterans as he lived by the credo "The Future is Now. " First-year Cal Coach Sonny Dykes, on the other hand, announced Friday the future is 2015 when he named true freshman Jared Goff as starting quarterback. There are few axioms more true in college football than this one: "You can't win big with a true freshman at quarterback. " USC infamously tried to tempt this theory five years ago this summer when Pete Carroll shockingly announced first-year man Matt Barkley, not third-year junior Aaron Corp, would start.

Headline writers can cease and desist. Reporters should dial it down a notch. Cliche-leaning bloggers need to give this a rest. Barr none, Barr code, raising the Barr ... UCLA linebacker Anthony Barr has heard them all. Pun is fun, folks, but move on. "You hear that stuff and you think, 'How did we get to this point, where people are using my name for jokes?'" Barr said. "Most of them are pretty corny and cheesy. " He has no one to blame for that diet but himself. Barr showed from the start last season that the move to outside linebacker qualified as an epiphany.

Peyton Manning has once again proved why he is the funniest pro athlete around, and brother Eli is not far behind him. The two star in a commercial for a new DirecTV feature that allows users to watch football on their smartphones. And what better way to sell that than by having the two NFL stars appear in a rap video. In a video reminiscent of some of Andy Samberg's work on "Saturday Night Live," the Mannings dress up, well, like you'd expect the Mannings to dress if they were rap stars, while performing "Football on Your Phone," a tune you will not be able to get out of your head after listening to it. And any video that features scones, milk, bad wigs and Alexander Graham Bell is worth watching.

Inbee Park, you've failed to make history again, falling short of a fourth-consecutive major in women's golf, so where do you go from here? Not Disneyland, that's for sure. How about back to South Korea, to blow off some steam by driving around in your Ferrari? “Yeah,” Park said. “Sounds nice.” The top-ranked golfer plans to take a few days off after a disappointing performance at the Women's British Open this weekend, where she finished more than a dozen strokes behind winner Stacy Lewis.

USC defensive lineman Leonard Williams was a Freshman All-American last season and is listed on several preseason watch lists as a possibility for postseason awards. The 6-foot-5, 290-pound sophomore said he isn't letting the attention go to his head. Defensive line coach Ed Orgeron would not stand for it, he said. "Coach O just tells me to 'stay out of the magazines, stay out of the articles,' all that type of stuff," Williams said. "He definitely keeps me humble. ... I'm just coming out and playing hard like I'm not on the radar.

USC senior Kevin Greene has switched from the defensive line to tight end to augment a talented but thin position group. Juniors Xavier Grimble and Randall Telfer and sophomore Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick are the only scholarship tight ends on the roster. Grimble, 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds, caught 29 passes last season, five for touchdowns. Telfer, 6-4, 250, caught 12 passes, four for touchdowns. The 6-4, 255-pound Cope-Fitzpatrick caught two passes for 12 yards. Greene, 6-4 and 255 pounds, played in 11 games on defense and special teams last season and made five tackles, including two sacks.

PHILADELPHIA  - Matt Barkley hasn't even played in his first NFL exhibition game, and already the Philadelphia Eagles rookie quarterback has his ring. It's made of black rubber, and he wears it on his left hand, a temporary wedding band Barkley wears during practices and while lifting weights. He plans to switch eventually to a silver-colored one. "My wife didn't really notice at first, but when she did, she really appreciated it," said Barkley, the former USC standout who married college sweetheart Brittany Langdon last month.

Max Wittek took snaps from the first-team center during warmups, was first up when quarterbacks began throwing passes to receivers and again during seven-on-seven drills. Cody Kessler took the first snap with the offense during a pre-workout drill and also for the final full-squad drill. So it went Saturday in USC's initial training camp practice, the third-year sophomores alternating opportunities as Coach Lane Kiffin revealed no obvious sign indicating the front-runner to start the Aug. 29 opener at Hawaii.

Former USC quarterback and current Philadelphia Eagles rookie Matt Barkley married longtime girlfriend Brittany Langdon over the weekend. Though Trojans fans have gotten to know Barkley pretty well over the last four years (and even more if they followed him during his days as a star QB for Mater Dei), he and Langdon have kept their relationship private. Well, private is a relative term. Keep in mind that this is 2013, so every now and then Barkley sometimes just can't seem to help himself from gushing on Twitter.
