Jaret Wright passed for 188 yards and ran for a touchdown to lead Katella to a 21-14 victory over Estancia in a nonleague game Friday night at Orange Coast College. Wright, a junior, dove in from the one-yard line with 5 minutes 48 seconds remaining in the first quarter to set up Katella's first score. Wright completed nine of 12 attempts and threw one interception. He was also his team's leading rusher with 48 yards.

Two early touchdowns stood up for Estancia, which upset previously undefeated Canyon, 14-9, in a nonleague game Friday night at Orange Coast College. The Eagles (2-3) survived three turnovers and 12 penalties. Their defense held Canyon, which had scored 143 points in its first four games, to three first downs. In 31 plays from scrimmage, Canyon (4-1) netted positive yardage only eight times.

Senior quarterback Steve Walker completed 10 of 17 passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns to lead Newport Harbor High School to a 31-7 victory over Estancia Friday night at Newport Harbor. Marc Tagliaferri, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound running back, added 105 yards and a touchdown in 13 carries for the Sailors (4-1). Newport Harbor broke the game open with 2:42 left in the first half when Walker hit senior tight end George Greenwalt with a 25-yard touchdown pass.

Trabuco Hills High School combined a power running game with big plays to beat Estancia, 35-7, in Pacific Coast League football Friday night at Davidson Field. Late in the first quarter, a 63-yard touchdown run off left tackle by Trabuco Hills running back Jeff Clayton and Jason Teno's conversion gave the Mustangs a 7-0 lead.

The lights weren't working as Corona del Mar and Estancia were ready to take the field in a nonleague game at Newport Harbor High School Friday night. But when the lighting was restored 25 minutes after the scheduled kickoff, the teams played to a 13-13 tie. Corona del Mar (1-1-1) trailed, 13-7, with 3 minutes 14 seconds left in the fourth quarter, but tied it when Jeff Wegener caught a 10-yard pass from Todd Kehrli, who completed eight of 17 passes for 75 yards.

Estancia linebacker and kicker Mike Smith made the biggest plays on offense and defense to give the Eagles a 3-0 nonleague victory over La Quinta Friday night at Bolsa Grande High School. Smith, a 5-foot-7, 175-pound senior, kicked a 34-yard field goal with 7:10 left in the fourth quarter and Estancia improved to 2-0.

Estancia's margin for victory was narrow. Just how narrow was subject to debate. The Eagles (5-2-1, 2-1) defeated Trabuco Hills, 20-17, Friday night when Jason Teno's 35-yard field-goal attempt went wide right with 44 seconds to play. Estancia quarterback Matt Johner, who led his team back from a seven-point, fourth-quarter deficit, said the kick was wide by an inch. "He barely missed it," said Johner, who scored two touchdowns and completed 12 of 16 passes for 123 yards.

Junior Leofa scored five touchdowns and had 215 yards total offense Thursday, leading Los Amigos to a 34-20 nonleague victory over Estancia at Newport Harbor High. Leofa caught a 75-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ape Tuato, who threw for 220 yards, to give Los Amigos (1-0) a 14-6 lead on the first play of the second quarter. Leofa also scored on runs of one, 10, 53 and 11 yards. Leofa caught four passes for 119 yards and rushed for 96 yards on eight carries.

A balanced running attack and stingy defense lifted Costa Mesa High School to a 26-3 victory over Estancia in a Pacific Coast League football game Friday night at Orange Coast College. It was the third consecutive victory for the Mustangs (5-4, 3-1 in league). Estancia dropped to 2-7, 1-3 "We're learning how to win, finally," Costa Mesa Coach Tom Baldwin said. Estancia's Arm Hegazi opened the scoring with a 24-yard field goal with 11:40 left in the second quarter.
