When Archive Corp. officials go on the road to woo investors these days, they have something jazzier to talk about than their hit computer memory product. Now, Archive officials can talk about H. Ross Perot, the Texas billionaire, computer entrepreneur and former General Motors director and chief critic. Last month, Perot's Dallas-based investment company announced plans to invest $6.7 million in Archive for the rights to certain technology developed by the small Costa Mesa firm.

Archive Corp. has agreed in principle to acquire a private, Florida-based, computer tape-drive maker for an undisclosed sum. Maynard Electronics is a 7-year-old company that makes tape drives for International Business Machines Corp. personal computers and compatible machines. Like Archive's products, Maynard's tape drives are used to make copies of data stored on hard-disk drives. Financial details of the sale were not disclosed.

Archive Corp., a manufacturer of computer storage equipment, said Monday that it will lay off 130 to 140 employees at its Ann Arbor, Mich., division as part of a corporate restructuring. Terri Douglas, an Archive spokeswoman, said the layoffs will occur over the next four weeks at the company's Irwin Magnetic Systems division. She said the division's employment will total 100 after the layoffs.
