Event co-chairwoman Laurie Burrows Grad said the 19th annual event, founded in honor of her father, Broadway legend Abe Burrows, raised more than $1.6 million for the Alzheimer's Assn. Asked what brought him to the Beverly Hilton, producer Jerry Bruckheimer replied, "Robert Iger. " "He's the man," said Nick Jonas, who came to sing Cole Porter tunes. This month's issue of an insistently hip downtown New York publication includes a story on Scots novelist Irvine Welsh, suggesting that after the success of "Trainspotting" he had a decision to make: Embrace popular culture, or make his work more hard-core. All you can say is: Hello? What else--after the junkies, baby death and general squalor of "Trainspotting"--was Welsh going to do? Do a punk version of "Mary Poppins"? "Brave," its filmmakers at Pixar Animation Studios would like you to know, is not your mother's fairy tale, beginning with its unruly heroine, Merida.
