Kitchens, bathrooms, family rooms and master bedroom suites have each in turn been the fashionable room to remodel or add in American homes. Now the media room has been added to the list. The media room in which television, audio equipment and sometimes a home computer are arranged for maximum user convenience is being ushered in on a wave of increased sales of videocassette recorders, home computers and video games. Another development is the improvement in television sound.

Stephen Gaghan, the Oscar writing screenwriter, and his wife, fashion designer Minnie Mortimer, have put their Brentwood home up for sale at $4.995 million. Set behind gates and stone columns, the shingle-clad house looks like it could be set in Nantucket. The 5,267 square feet of living space features wood-beam ceilings, a painted wood-paneled den/library, a corner sunroom,  a media room, five bedrooms and 6.5 bathrooms. "We wanted a place to watch sports with friends, listen to music, dance a little and, for me, play the guitar," says the husband, the former CEO of a medical manufacturing firm and a music aficionado. Blair obliged with a welcoming, yet functional, Asian decor.

Update: Actor-producer Matt Battaglia and his wife, Tina, have sold their Hollywood Hills home for $3.23 million.
