More than 80 years after it was first published -- and later outlawed -- in Germany, a signed copy of Adolf Hitler's infamous manifesto "Mein Kampf" was sold Thursday for $34,900. The semi-autobiographical work outlining Hitler's anti-Semitic ideology was sold to an anonymous telephone bidder at an auction in the town of Ludlow in western England. Written in 1924 while Hitler was serving a four-year prison term in the southern German region of Bavaria, the book was first published in 1926.

In the aftermath of World War II, Germany approved a series of rules and restrictions designed to give teeth to the slogan "never again." More than 60 years later, it remains illegal to wear the swastika or to give the stiff-armed Nazi salute. Denying the Holocaust is punishable by a prison term. Since 1945, it has also been verboten verboten to publish "Mein Kampf," Adolf Hitler's notorious autobiographical manifesto. These rules were put in place with the best of intentions; after a war that killed tens of millions of civilians, including 6 million European Jews, it seemed a small price to pay to help ensure that Nazism did not reappear.

Re " 'Ring' Debate Revived for 2010," by David Ng, July 16: L.A. County Supervisor Mike Antonovich's suggestion that L.A. Opera cancel its forthcoming production of Wagner's "Ring" because the composer was an anti-Semite is inane. The idea that great composers, or artists of any stripe, should be shunned because of their personal or political beliefs smacks of censorship. Historically, there have been many great musicians, writers, painters and other artists who have been anti-Semitic.
