A San Clemente woman was recently appointed by Gov. Pete Wilson to a state advisory panel studying ways to assist students in meeting their career goals. Meredith Khachigian, a community and public affairs consultant and former member of the University of California Board of Regents, was named to the School-to-Career Advisory Council.

I read with great interest your article on UC Irvine's rise in stature as a leading university ("An 'A' for Improvement," Oct. 19). As a longtime Orange County resident, and as a member of the UC Board of Regents, I take great pride in UCI's success, and I'm pleased to see that the university is being recognized for its accomplishments. This recognition has come from many sources, including: U.S. News & World Report, which recently ranked UCI the eighth-best public university in the country: the National Cancer Institute, which has given UCI's Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center its most prestigious honor, designation as a "comprehensive cancer center," and the Assn.

Regent Reappointed: Gov. George Deukmejian has reappointed Meredith J. Khachigian of San Clemente to a 12-year term on the UC Board of Regents. Khachigian, 44, has been on the board since 1987. She has also been a member of the state Commission for the Review of the Master Plan for Higher Education. She is the wife of attorney Kenneth L. Khachigian, one of the governor's political advisers.

Gov. George Deukmejian on Thursday appointed Meredith J. Khachigian of San Clemente, wife of one of his most trusted political advisers, to the University of California Board of Regents. A Republican, Khachigian will fill the unexpired term of David Geffen of Beverly Hills, who resigned, and be eligible for reappointment in 1990. Her appointment to the prestigious post is subject to Senate confirmation.

Meredith J. Khachigian, a member of the University of California Board of Regents since 1987, was unanimously elected chairman of the 26-member governing body Friday. Khachigian, 45, of San Clemente, is the wife of Ken Khachigian, a Republican campaign strategist and former speech writer for former Presidents Richard M. Nixon and Ronald Reagan. An alumna of UC Santa Barbara, Khachigian said she plans to make improving undergraduate education a priority of her one-year term as chairwoman.

Peltason was inaugurated Friday as the 16th president of the University of California in a stately ceremony punctuated with references to the system's economic woes and challenged by a large demonstration of students angry about rising fees. In his address at UCLA's Royce Hall, Peltason pledged to work closely with California's industries, politicians and other educators to ensure a better economic foundation for the nine-campus, 166,000-student university.
