LAS VEGAS - It wasn't the mysterious fan with a briefcase of cash who picked this town clean during NFL gambling season. Rather, it's been bettors wearing a new orange Peyton Manning jersey, or Packers fans with their cheesehead hats, or Patriots fans - who loyally bet on their favored teams each week. The problem for Las Vegas sports books is that many popular NFL teams beat the point spread during the regular season. Gamblers in Las Vegas flocked to bet on Oregon State when sports books listed UCLA as more than a 10-point favorite, resulting in a substantial dip in the point spread. Unbeaten UCLA (3-0), which will play Oregon State at the Rose Bowl on Saturday, stands as a seven-point favorite at the multi-property MGM Resorts sports book and at the LVH casino. “The sharp bettors think highly of Oregon State,” said Jay Rood, director of MGM Resorts' book. “It's all sharp money now.” While dramatic point-spread moves can sometimes alarm bookmakers, Rood said since the heavy betting is coming on Oregon State to win following a similar pattern in the Beavers' upset of Wisconsin this month, he does not suspect anything sinister.

Jay Rood has posted the most important number of the year to sports gamblers in Las Vegas and throughout the country. In Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis on Feb. 5, the AFC champion New England Patriots are favored to defeat the New York Giants by 31/2 points. Also of interest, the over/under for total points in the game is 551/2 points. Now, Rood, vice president of MGM Resorts supervising 12 race and sports books across Nevada, including Aria, MGM Grand, Mirage and the Bellagio on the Strip, waits for another seven figures of action to come his way. How did you finalize those numbers?
