Was that seriously the people's choice on the "American Music Awards" (ABC, Jan. 25)? What people? I thought the majority of it was a disgrace. Such as the clothes, or lack of. Were all those groups chosen by people who listen to only Pirate or Power radio stations? I believe there are a lot of us who appreciate real music, such as Michael Bolton's. Jane Bodine, San Dimas

** 1/2 MICHAEL BOLTON "Time, Love and Tenderness" Columbia Soul singer Michael Bolton has taken critical lashings because his R&B ballad style seems so grossly derivative. This time, though, his vocals are infused with some original touches on what is his best album by far. Bolton virtually owns the romantic pop-R&B ballad turf. Working with his strongest material yet, he employs an unerring commercial touch.

A federal appeals court upheld a $5.4-million verdict against singer Michael Bolton for using parts of the 1964 Isley Brothers song "Love Is a Wonderful Thing" in his song of the same name. A three-judge panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals let stand a 1994 jury verdict against Bolton, saying the jury had sufficient evidence to reach its decision. Ronald Isley had sued Bolton, saying he violated the copyright by incorporating elements of the tune and words into his hit song.
The Scene: Sunday's first VH-1 Honors at the Shrine Auditorium. A party for 2,100 followed the 2 1/2-hour live concert. Since VH-1 is the adult contemporary sibling of MTV, the party was like an opulent ($200,000-plus would be a ballpark figure on cost), 20-year high school reunion. Who Was There: Honored for their charitable work and performing were Stevie Wonder, Bonnie Raitt, Garth Brooks, Michael Bolton, Melissa Etheridge, the Rev. Al Green, Kenny G and the former Prince.

Margaret Cho is doing the rounds, and when this comic actress does the rounds, the result is likely to be just a little more Cho than you wanted to know. And while the "Dancing With the Stars" alum and"Drop Dead Diva"actress kept it relatively tame on "The View" last Friday, hitting "safe" topics such as race and money, she let her pansexual flag fly Monday with Wendy Williams. "I'm really attracted to all different types of people," Cho explained to Williams. "So I don't like to say that I'm gay or I'm straight -- I'm just slutty.
