MICHAEL Douglas has been missing in action from the big screen for the last thee years. The reason for the absence wasn't because he was licking his wounds from the poor reception for his last movie, the ill-advised remake of the comedy "The In-Laws." The 61-year-old Oscar-winning actor-producer has been happily playing the role of dad to his two children with second wife Catherine Zeta-Jones: 5-year-old son Dylan and 3-year-old daughter Carys.

After half a year of chemotherapy and radiation therapy, his throat cancer tumor is gone, actor Michael Douglas said Tuesday on the "Today" show. That's great news for Douglas, who told David Letterman on Aug. 31 that his throat cancer had progressed to stage IV before it was identified, lurking at the base of his tongue. (Stage IV is pretty bad, because the cancer has typically begun spreading to other parts of the body.)   Although throat cancer has been linked to genetics , Douglas said he's swearing off tobacco and most alcohol -- barring the occasional glass of wine.

The event: Matt Damon and producer Jerry Weintraub teamed up Tuesday to emcee the 2014 UNICEF Ball, so often going off script in their lively, largely impromptu dialogue that at one point Damon turned to Weintraub and, referencing Sunday's Golden Globes telecast, asked if the two were the night's Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. The honors: Presented by Baccarat, the black-tie affair at the Beverly Wilshire Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills honored Michael Douglas, a United Nations Messenger of Peace, and Ghada Irani, the U.S. Fund for UNICEF's Southern California board chair, with Danny Kaye Humanitarian Awards for their support of UNICEF's mission to save and improve children's lives.

Michael Douglas certainly knew how to make an entrance Thursday evening when he received the 37th annual American Film Institute Life Achievement Award at an event held on Sony Pictures Studios Stage 15 in Culver City. A clip montage playing on a large screen concluded with the climatic dinner-entrance scene from Douglas' 1997 film "The Game," in which his character falls from atop a building and crashes through a glass ceiling.

Michael Douglas' son reportedly has been beaten in a Pennsylvania prison, winding up with a broken finger and a broken leg. Cameron Douglas, 34, suffered the injuries - including a broken femur - after a New York City crime boss put a $100 bounty on his head during the prison flag-football league season because he was a "rat," a prison source told the New York Post. Although the younger Douglas reportedly dropped out of the league where he was targeted, he nonetheless turned up badly injured.

After mentioning son Cameron Douglas briefly in his acceptance speech at Sunday's Emmy Awards, winner Michael Douglas expanded on the situation backstage, addressing his son's current five-year stint in federal prison. "My son is in federal prison based upon he's been a drug addict for a large part of his life and was selling drugs," Douglas said. Part of the punishment, he explained, is that if a person uses drugs while incarcerated - "if you happen to have a slip," Douglas said - that prisoner gets extra punishment.

Michael Douglas wishes he could tell you that the relative dearth of awards recognition over his four-decade career in movies and TV means nothing to him. But he can't. And now with his " two-hander " Emmys victory speech scorched into the public imagination, the 68-year-old star doesn't have to put a good face on it anymore. Until he snapped his quarter-century awards cold streak Sunday night -- snatching the Emmy for lead actor in a miniseries or movie for his turn as Liberace in the HBO biopic “ Behind the Candelabra ” -- Douglas hadn't scored a statuette since 1987, when he won a best actor Oscar for his performance in “Wall Street.” Before that, you'd have to rewind to 1975, when he scored a best picture Oscar for producing the drama “One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest,” for the star's only other appearance on a major awards podium.

TV is the new black for film gentry. Once regarded as a purgatory for serious actors and producers, television has been attracting top-tier movie talent on both sides of the camera for years thanks in no small part to the deep character studies encouraged by cable networks. And this year's Primetime Emmy nominations, which roll out early Thursday morning, may underscore the point as never before. Film stars Kevin Spacey, Jane Fonda, Jeff Daniels, Shirley MacLaine, Holly Hunter, Al Pacino, Helen Mirren, Michael Douglas, Matt Damon and Kevin Bacon, as well as respected filmmakers David Fincher, Steven Soderbergh and Jane Campion are just some of the cinema-tilted talent in line to get the early morning wake-up call late this week.
