On a break, he decided on an easy ride through the Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada on his BMW R1150R. Maureen Ryan, 55, an outspoken critic of the U.S. government's treatment of soldiers sprayed with the herbicide Agent Orange during the Vietnam War, died Sept. 8 of pancreatic cancer in Boca Raton, Fla. Ryan and her husband, a Vietnam veteran, and their two children, who were both born with birth defects, came to symbolize the unhealed wounds of the Vietnam War when they became part of a class-action suit filed by veterans exposed to Agent Orange.

ON THE MOUND: It wasn't a clean inning — he gave up a two-out triple to Kyle Banks — but closer Brian Fuentes looked a lot sharper during a scoreless fourth than he did in his first outing Friday, when he gave up a run on two hits and a walk against Colorado.

Defense attorneys abruptly rested their case Friday in the 7-day-old trial of ousted Gov. Evan Mecham and his brother, Willard, who are accused of concealing a $350,000 campaign loan. The defense ended its case after three days without calling either of the Mechams to testify. The attorneys for both sides are to meet with the judge Monday to discuss instructions to the jury, and closing arguments are expected to begin Tuesday.

The Arizona Supreme Court on Tuesday denied an injunction request by dog and horse track owners, opening the way for Gov. Jane Dee Hull to immediately sign casino agreements with Native American tribes. It was the third time in three days that the tracks petitioned a state court for a stay preventing the implementation of Proposition 202, a measure to expand gambling on tribal lands that was approved by voters Nov. 5.

The Marine Corps said Wednesday that the commander of an EA-6B attack jet squadron has been relieved of duty in connection with the probe of a cable-car tragedy involving another unit that killed 20 people in Italy. A judge took under advisement Tuesday a request that he reconsider a gag order in the Phoenix Suns' drug case and dismissed one count against each of the three defendants because the only witness against them was killed in a traffic accident. Judge Michael Ryan of Maricopa County Superior Court also said that he would give defense attorneys an opportunity to interview the Suns' Walter Davis, a key witness in the case, before deciding whether to order the release of Davis' medical records.
