Despite gains achieved by women in the workplace in recent years, relations between the sexes from 9 to 5 aren't all they could be. In fiscal year 1989-90, 1,457 people statewide filed claims of sexual harassment with the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing--up from 1,179 in 1986-87. Laguna Hills attorney Michelle A. Reinglass, who devotes a large part of her practice to employment law, isn't sure that the incidence of sexual harassment is increasing.

Three female members of the Mission Viejo Country Club have filed a lawsuit alleging that the club discriminates against women by making it difficult for them to golf with their female friends. The lawsuit also says that the club illegally bars women from eating at a male-only luxury lounge. "There is absolutely no reason for it," said Michelle A. City information systems director Maureen Tighe is seeking more than $500,000 in her ongoing sexual harassment complaint against Police Chief James Cook and the city, according to court papers filed Tuesday. Tighe's lawsuit, filed in federal court, alleges that Cook sexually harassed her at work after they ended a seven-year relationship in 1995.

The Anti-Defamation League has honored two Orange County attorneys, Donald S. Gray and Michelle A. Reinglass, with Jurisprudence Awards for their human rights contributions. The popular Angelo's Hamburgers has filed a $10-million claim against the City of Anaheim to recoup losses the restaurant owners blamed on "malicious" persecution by the city when it sued Angelo's over having outdoor tables and chairs. Earlier this summer, a jury handed Angelo's a victory when it decided that the restaurant was not violating zoning laws requiring a special permit for an outdoor patio.

I was pleased to see recognition given to Frederick Aguirre in the article "Writer, Lawyer Make It to Hall of Fame" (Jan. 20). Mr. Aguirre has made significant contributions to the community and deserves to be honored by Placentia. However, the article focused primarily on Mr. Aguirre's activities within the Latino community. Mr. Aguirre has made significant contributions and been involved in numerous civic programs and projects of a more general nature and not limited in focus to a singular community.

The attorney for a coalition seeking a vote on the city's controversial General Plan has asked for a rehearing of a recent appeals court ruling that the coalition's referendum petition was defective.
