The suspected drug overdose death of a 15-year old girl who attended a massive rave in Los Angeles last weekend has drawn attention to the drug her family was told was found in her body: Ecstasy. Officials said use of the hallucinogen and stimulant was widespread among the scores of partygoers taken by ambulance to emergency rooms from the Electric Daisy Carnival, which was held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and surrounding Exposition Park, attracting 185,000 people over two days.

A heart transplant candidate from Louisiana who was unable to find a doctor willing to perform an abortion in her home state had the procedure done in Texas. Louisiana State University Medical Center and other hospitals refused to cover the abortion for Michelle Lee, 26, who has a weak, irregular heartbeat that makes pregnancy dangerous for her and the fetus. Her condition wouldn't allow her to have the operation at a clinic.

Actors, athletes and recording artists urged Americans to swear off drinking for an "Alcohol-Free Weekend" April 3-5 in an event sponsored by the National Council on Alcoholism. April has been designated National Alcohol Awareness Month, and the council said that one in 10 American adults is an alcoholic. It attributes about 100,000 deaths yearly to alcoholism.
