It is difficult to imagine a couple more exquisitely designed to torment each other than John "Papa" Phillips and his once-upon-a-two-timing wife, "Mama" Michelle. Reading their simultaneously released autobiographies, "Papa John" (his) and "California Dreamin' " (hers), is like reading the transcripts in a divorce trial.

Phillips, 59, and Sinatra, 63, produced musical events during an era when female producers were rare.

Michelle Phillips (Letters, Oct. 4), deplores children playing with war toys at a birthday party. Is she aware of war toys offered in catalogues, complete with invasion maps? Also for "dreams of action, dreams of adventure," there are camouflage clothing and bedding. It was an inglorious sight to me the day I saw a tot at a church preschool clad in camouflage pants. How do parents explain kill, kill, to their children as they take them to Sunday school where they are taught to love their neighbor?

I have had it! My 4-year-old son and I attended a birthday party recently for a little boy turning 5. When I arrived, the presents had been opened and the children were running around the vast grounds shooting each other with Rambo M-16s, Rambo .45 revolvers and Uzi submachine guns. The mothers sat around smiling and chatting, sipping diet colas as the hand grenades were thrown and the little tots killed each other off one by one. As the carnage continued, my son looked at me as if to question if he too could go on a killing spree with his peers.
