Inbee Park essentially won the Kraft Nabisco Championship on Sunday on her first hole at the Mission Hills Country Club course in Rancho Mirage. Park, from South Korea, made a resolute birdie while Azusa's Lizette Salas, 23, who had started the day in second place and three shots behind Park, hit a nervous drive in the rough and made a double bogey while her playing partner, Park, watched without outward expression. But inwardly Park must have been giving herself a high-five.

Wanna feel old? Ponder this: Michelle Wie will turn 21 in three weeks. We remember her as the little girl from Hawaii who started getting headlines when she was 10 and actually winning local tournaments about the same time. So much for memories. On Oct. 11 she can have her first legal beer. No question she can afford it. She has made millions, some of it even on the golf course. You remember the story. When she started out, most girls her age were probably still playing with dolls.

RANCHO MIRAGE -- Stacy Lewis, the American who climbed to No. 1 in the world rankings two weeks ago, finished the Kraft Nabisco Championship at Mission Hills Country Club with a final-round even-par 72 and a four-day total of 287. When the day is over she'll be in the middle of the pack. Lewis, who won here two years ago, didn't seem distraught about the mediocre week. "I've got a lot of events to play, and I've won twice already this year," said Lewis, who will remain No. 1 in the Rolex World Rankings that measure the performance of the LPGA golfers.

RANCHO MIRAGE -- Lydia Ko, a 15-year-old from New Zealand who won a tournament on the LPGA Tour last year, is paired Thursday and Friday with 23-year-old Michelle Wie, who once contended at the Kraft Nabisco Championship, the tour's first major, when she was 13. Wie, whose dark ponytail is died red near the bottom, birdied the ninth hole and is one under par, same as Ko. Wie has made only one cut this season and earned a little over $6,000....

It was criticism from one of the best in women's golf, and Michelle Wie was hurt. Annika Sorenstam, who has retired from the LPGA, suggested last month during the U.S. Women's Open that Wie was shortchanging women's golf by pursuing her degree at Stanford. "I think her focus, in my opinion, should be more on golf," Sorenstam said. "She's very distracted with school, doesn't really play as much full time as I thought she would. I think she needs to come out here and compete more regularly.

Cristie Kerr is a big-game player. The 33-year-old is a two-time major winner on the LPGA circuit and she is the highest-ranked American at No. 3 in the world in the Rolex Rankings. Michelle Wie wants to be a big-game player. The 21-year-old hasn't won any of the four women's majors but has played well enough to be ranked ninth in the world. Wie has accomplished this while continuing her studies at Stanford University despite a full pro schedule. The season's first major, the $2-million Kraft Nabisco Championship at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, begins Thursday, and certainly the defending champion and No. 1 player in the world, Yani Tseng, is considered the favorite.

RANCHO MIRAGE -- Na Yeon Choi and Suzann Pettersen posted early four-under-par 68s Thursday to take the early lead at the Kraft Nabisco Championship at Mission Hills Country Club. This is golf's first major of the year and Choi, winner of the 2012 U.S. Women's Open, didn't have a bogey in the first round. Choi is nicknamed "NYC," and said she was happy to play early Thursday before the greens became faster in the desert heat. Lydia Ko, the 15-year-old amateur from New Zealand, and her playing partner, 23-year-old Michelle Wie, who first competed in an LPGA event when she was 12 years old, both shot even-par 72. Wie has only made a single cut this season.

The fact that an American golfer is ranked No. 1 in the world is not a surprise. The fact that a second golfer is ranked No. 1 - a woman - is very much a surprise. Of course, everyone knows Tiger Woods; the other is Stacy Lewis, and she has been talking a little Twitter trash with her top-ranked counterpart. "I tweeted Tiger, 'Congrats. Welcome back to No. 1.'" She was being funny. "Apparently in [140] characters, people couldn't find the humor in that," Lewis said. Lewis' ascension to No. 1 caught a lot of people by surprise.

Europe won the Solheim Cup for the first time since 2003 on Sunday, finishing powerfully to beat the United States, 15-13, at Killeen Castle in Dunsany, Ireland. Norway's Suzann Pettersen turned the momentum Europe's way when she recovered from 1 down with birdies on the last three holes to beat Michelle Wie by one hole. Her win left Europe needing only one point from the last two singles to win the trophy, but the side captained by Alison Nicholas did even better.
