Whitworth, a junior right-hander, allowed two runs in the second and one more in the fourth. But no Fullerton runner reached second base after the fourth. Whitworth retired the final 14 batters he faced. It was the team-leading fifth complete game for Whitworth (5-6). Irvine has scored 15 runs in his six losses. Fullerton led, 3-0, after four innings, but Irvine rallied for two runs in the fifth and three more in the eighth to take the lead, 5-3. In the eighth, Ed Luna and Al Rodriguez singled to start the inning for Irvine.

Mike Goodcase was 3 for 5 with a home run, two doubles and three RBIs to lead Whittier Christian over Brethren, 13-4, in an Olympic League baseball game on Blair Field at Long Beach. Darrel Lancaster (8-0) allowed one hit in four innings and struck out five.

Mike Goodcase, a senior outfielder from UC Irvine, was named the Big West Conference Player of the Week on Monday. Goodcase went eight for 11 in the Anteaters' three-game series against Cal State Fullerton last week, raising his average to a team-leading .347. He had six runs batted in with a grand slam and a double Saturday in Irvine's 22-12 loss to Fullerton. Goodcase has a nine-game hitting streak entering today's nonconference game at the University of San Diego.

Mike Goodcase was 4 for 5--including two home runs--with three runs scored and six RBIs as Whittier Christian romped to a 17-5 victory over Gladstone in the Southern Section 1-A playoffs at Anaheim's La Palma Park. Goodcase's homer raised his total to nine this season. Whittier held a 5-2 lead after two innings and then erupted for 10 runs in the third. Daryl Lancaster (13-1) relieved Shannon Wright after two innings to pick up the win for Whittier Christian (20-5).

Freshman outfielder Mike Goodcase was 3 for 5 to lead UC Irvine to a 10-8 nonconference baseball victory over Cal Lutheran Wednesday at Anteater Field. Irvine is 18-13-1, the team's best start since 1981, when the Anteaters were 19-13. The win was Coach Mike Gerakos' 200th victory in his eight-year career at Irvine. He is 200-203-7. Goodcase had one RBI; teammates Stacy Parker and Al Rodriguez had two hits each, and Jeff Oberdank and John Seeburger each hit a triple.

UC Irvine rallied for five runs in the ninth inning to beat UC Riverside, 11-10, in a nonconference baseball game Saturday at Irvine. Ed Luna's line drive to center scored Mike Goodcase from third base for the winning run. Jon Skaggs led off the ninth with a two-run homer. Stacy Parker walked and one out later, pinch-hitter Jim Koehler doubled home Parker. After a passed ball and the second out of the inning, Goodcase singled to score Koehler.

Four players had RBI singles to lead UC Irvine to a 5-3 victory over Southern California College Thursday in a nonconference baseball game at UC Irvine. Al Rodriguez and Mike Goodcase had RBI singles in the first inning when Irvine took a 3-1 lead. Chris Gallego added an RBI single in the seventh and Billy Bardens had a run-scoring single in the eighth for Irvine (17-9), which took a 5-1 lead. SCC rallied for two runs in the eighth.
