For Mike Kelly, talking about the weather is anything but shooting the breeze. As president and chief executive of the Weather Channel Cos., Kelly oversees a cable network in nearly every one of the 100-million cable homes in the country; weather.com, a website with more than 40 million monthly visitors; and the second most popular smartphone app behind Facebook. Annual revenues are north of $500 million. In other words, your rainy day is his cash cow. The Weather Channel, which turns 29 on Monday, was initially a hard sell.

They formed arguably the greatest college outfield of their time, and possibly for generations to come. Even in the long and distinguished history of Arizona State baseball, that cradle of major league talent that produced some of the finest players in the game, no three outfielders with their ability and potential played side by side like they did. Perhaps no three others will ever again.

Your article tries to summarize the issues in the most recent conflict between city management and the Huntington Beach Police Officers Assn., but there is much more to the story. Readers may be left with the impression that it is all about money. They may look at the close figures quoted in your article and wonder if the officers are being reasonable.

Watch Mike Kelly run. Watch him hit. Or catch. Or throw. Kelly doesn't run as much as he floats, like Carl Lewis in mid-flight of an Olympic 100 meters, sprinting to first base. His bat seems so light in his hands when he slaps an outside pitch into right field for a single. He catches the ball smoothly, effortlessly snapping his glove shut, the ball tucked safely inside. Kelly's right arm whips the ball into the infield in a blur.

Brian Gross is anything but lost in his keenly focused, wildly naughty multimedia musical "If I Were Lost" at Highways, about the ultimate antihero--a lustful gay druggie named Bill (Blaine Cotton). Bill is ostensibly looking for inner peace in the desert but is distracted by his abundant cravings for sexual encounters and drugs. His first temptation is a black leather boy-toy named Dante (Joe Decker), who takes pleasure in stealing away other men's boyfriends.

Perhaps no one was happier to hear the name of the new coach than the former coach. Bob Richards was elated with the news that Thousand Oaks High has hired Mike Kelly to replace him as football coach. Kelly has been part of the Lancer football staff for 12 seasons, the past two as a varsity assistant to Richards. Richards resigned as head football coach in January. The school announced that he wanted to spend more time with his family and that he might be an assistant under the new coach.

On feeling the charge from the crack of the bat, Mike Kelly raced from the batter's box in long, fluid strides, rounded first base gracefully and eased into second as he had countless times before. This time, though, the moment was special, worth savoring. The Atlanta Braves' rookie left fielder from Los Alamitos High had just notched his first major league hit in his second at-bat of the regular season.
