David Beckham is now playing for a club team in France and Landon Donovan is in the midst of a self-imposed sabbatical from soccer. So the Galaxy's star power was muted going into its Major League Soccer opener. But veteran Mike Magee filled the void Sunday, scoring three goals in the Galaxy's 4-0 victory over the Chicago Fire at the Home Depot Center. It was the first hat trick of his career for Magee, in his 11th MLS season, and put an exclamation point on a day when the two-time defending champion Galaxy received its rings in a pregame ceremony that featured parachutists and fireworks.

When Mike Magee walked into StubHub Center on Friday morning, the return inspired memories and goose bumps. "This stadium [is] a place that had a pretty special place in my heart," said Magee, a fan favorite during his five seasons with the Galaxy. It could become even more special if Magee gets an opportunity to play Saturday afternoon before a sold-out crowd in the U.S. national team's exhibition with South Korea. Major League Soccer's reigning most valuable player, Magee went nine years between call-ups to a national team camp.

The first time Mike Magee was invited to train with the U.S. soccer national team, he was young and cocky and admits he didn't appreciate the honor. So it's probably no surprise that it took nine years before he was asked back. "When you're young you feel like it's just a normal thing and you take it for granted," said Magee, who is at StubHub Center in Carson for Coach Juergen Klinsmann's final extended camp before this summer's World Cup. "I won't make that mistake again. " It took a 21-goal season that ended with Magee hoisting Major League Soccer's most-valuable-player award to change the way the national team looked at the Chicago Fire forward.

There have been times this season when the Galaxy has looked like anything but a champion. Good thing appearances aren't nearly as important as results when it comes to the playoffs, which the Galaxy opened Thursday by rallying for a 2-1 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps at the Home Depot Center. Goals from Mike Magee and Landon Donovan during a four-minute span of the second half sent the defending MLS champions on to the Western Conference semifinals against the San Jose Earthquakes.

Mike Magee had a goal and an assist to help the Galaxy overcome the absence of David Beckham and beat the Chicago Fire, 2-0, Wednesday night at Toyota Park. Magee, a native of Chicago, scored in the 23rd minute after Jovan Kirovski converted a midfield turnover into a counter-attack for the Galaxy (8-4-10). The Galaxy was playing without Beckham after he earned a one-game suspension for a red card in Saturday's 2-0 loss to Seattle. In the 54th minute, Magee sent a lead pass to Landon Donovan, who raced 50 yards past two defenders before scoring past goalkeeper Jon Busch.

SANDY, Utah — Mike Magee and Charlie Rugg scored early in the first half, and the Galaxy coasted to a 2-0 victory over Real Salt Lake on Saturday night. Brian Rowe became the first goalkeeper to earn a shutout in his MLS debut for the Galaxy (4-1-2) since Brian Perk in a 0-0 draw against Seattle on July 4, 2011. Magee scored on a header in the sixth minute. Juninho fed him a cross off a free kick into the center of the box and Magee put a perfect touch on the pass as he headed it inside the right post.

The Galaxy doubled the number of fit goalkeepers on its roster from one to two a little more than a week ago when Donovan Ricketts returned from his long spell on the shelf because of a broken arm. Two would be better than one. Ricketts missed more than two months, and the game in which he was injured, on June 25 at San Jose, certainly qualifies as the most memorable for the Galaxy this interesting season. This was because the replacement for Ricketts, Josh Saunders, was red-carded in the 43rd minute.

Some of Major League Soccer's most decorated players were at Red Bull Arena on Sunday. David Beckham was the most influential figure in the Galaxy's 1-0, playoff-opening victory over the New York Red Bulls, creating several opportunities with his long-range passes and assisting on Mike Magee's 15th-minute goal. Robbie Keane and Landon Donovan returned from injuries and narrowly missed adding to the top-seeded Galaxy's advantage in the two-game, total-goals series that concludes Thursday at the Home Depot Center.
