Tim Kish was in Los Angeles recruiting in his role as Arizona's defensive coordinator when school officials contacted him about taking over as interim head coach after Mike Stoops was fired Monday. Kish immediately headed back to Tucson, arriving about midnight. On the way, he said he thought about Stoops, their 7 1/2 seasons together, and started jotting down notes. Even back home, he didn't sleep much. "There were a lot of things running through my mind," Kish said Tuesday during the weekly Pacific 12 Conference football coaches' conference call.

The Mike Stoops era at Arizona got off to a winning, if unspectacular, start Saturday night with a 21-3 victory over Northern Arizona at Tucson. Mike Bell carried 31 times for 118 yards for the Wildcats, including touchdown runs of two and nine yards. Kris Heavner completed 18 of 23 passes for 171 yards and a touchdown. Arizona led, 7-3, most of the night against the Division I-AA Lumberjacks before putting the game away with a pair of touchdowns in the last 10 minutes.

UCLA Coach Karl Dorrell and his Arizona counterpart, Mike Stoops, are familiar with each other, dating to their days as coordinators in the Big 12 Conference. From 1995 to 1998, Dorrell was offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach at Colorado. During that span, Stoops was the defensive coordinator at Kansas State. On Saturday, they will face each other as head coaches for the first time.

Congratulations to the Orange Bowl for giving berths to twins. No. 1 USC versus No. 2 Oklahoma for the national title Jan. 4 appears to be as evenly matched as Tiki versus Ronde Barber. First-year Arizona Coach Mike Stoops, who coached at Oklahoma for five years and coached against USC on Nov. 13, probably knows as much as anyone about both programs -- and even he can't tell them apart. "This game is as good a matchup you can find with teams that mirror each other in a lot of ways," Stoops said.

John Mackovic is gone and, to be blunt, the prospect of throwing up into a trash can never sounded so good. It seems that University of Arizona football players do not object to coaches who run dictatorships, so long as they keep the cross words between the crossbars. Arizona fired Mackovic five games into the 2003 season, ending a 2 1/2-year run/nightmare that produced a 10-18 record, a near mutiny by Wildcat players and misdirection mixed with insurrection.

UCLA's defense has spent much of the last three Saturdays chasing around opposing running backs and not catching them. Against Arizona, the Bruins will have something else thrown at them . . . literally. The Wildcats appear to have hit their Sonny Dykes' stride with the passing game. Since Nick Foles took over at quarterback, the Wildcats have been executing Dykes' spread offense "on all cylinders," UCLA Coach Rick Neuheisel said. Foles has passed for 1,097 yards and eight touchdowns in three weeks since taking over as the starter following a 27-17 loss to seventh-ranked Iowa.
