Millikan High School has withdrawn its sponsorship of a campus Bible study club after a residents group complained that such sponsorship is illegal. "Sometimes we're put in a position where we'd like to support something because their goals are healthy, but it's against the law," said Ed Eveland, assistant superintendent in charge of secondary schools, who last week ordered Millikan High School to cancel the charter of a campus club called the Bible Study Group.

A Long Beach high school student was facing charges Friday in connection with threats against four classmates through a fictitious Facebook account, authorities said. The 17-year-old boy is accused of setting up a Facebook profile under a fake name and using it to send threatening messages to four students at Millikan High School, said Sgt. Rico Fernandez of the Long Beach Police Department. "Posting a threat online is no different than making a threat face to face," Fernandez said.

When comedian Lea DeLaria returns to her rural hometown of Belleville, Ill., her neighbors don't give her a warm reception. "They meet me at the border with a noose and tar and feathers," DeLaria said in a telephone interview from Cambridge, Mass., where she lives now. "I don't really go home a lot." The reason for her unpopularity, DeLaria figures, is her chosen profession: She calls herself a "dyke comic," although she has achieved fame outside her field.

Josh Gingrich kept reminding himself that pitching is sometimes a sport of survival. "I figured that if I could get through the fourth inning," he said, "I could keep going." But Gingrich, the Edison High School baseball team's starter, watched the end of the fourth inning as an outfielder instead of the mound. Long Beach Millikan tagged him for three hits and four runs in the fourth on the way to an 8-2 victory in the Southern Section 5-A championship game Saturday night at Anaheim Stadium.
