After only two episodes had aired, the CW pulled the plug Friday on "The Beautiful Life: TBL," a drama executive-produced by Ashton Kutcher about young models living in New York. It was the first cancellation of the fall television season. "TBL" premiered Sept. 16 to just 1.5 million viewers, and the audience dropped this week to 1 million. The series starred Mischa Barton and Sarah Paxton. The CW said it would fill the 9 p.m. Wednesday slot with reruns of its new "Melrose Place" series.

For its new, Ashton Kutcher-produced world-of-modeling soap opera, "The Beautiful Life: TBL," CW has added an abbreviation of the title to the title itself -- as if to make it seem, somehow, that the show is already popular and being talked about, in shorthand. It's a kind of wishful thinking, as if I were to name myself "Robert Lloyd: Cool," in the hope that you might believe I am. In any case, the series, which premieres tonight, is not so different from, or significantly worse -- or better -- than the network's other two season premieres, "Melrose Place" and "The Vampire Diaries," which also affix stock characters, played mostly by good-looking young folk, to standard plot lines sexed up with pop songs and different flavors of visual glamour.

Mischa Barton is out of the hospital and plans a return to work almost two weeks after L.A. police said they escorted her from her home for an undisclosed medical problem. Spokesman Craig Schneider said Monday that the 23-year-old actress was "out of the hospital and continuing to improve in anticipation of resuming production as planned." He would not elaborate on Barton's condition, but said Monday that Barton planned to report to work on the new CW series "The Beautiful Life."
