Actors often learn to measure success in incremental ways that are perhaps imperceptible to outside observers. A name creeps its way up in the billing or onto a poster, he or she starts to appear in the trailer or on a theater standee, or perhaps one gets invited to participate in a promotional junket. Or, as has recently begun to happen for actress Missi Pyle, you get roles without having to audition for them.

The fifth annual Red Carpet Green Dress competition, which has designers competing to create eco-friendly fashion that will be showcased in front of millions of eyeballs on the Academy Awards red carpet, gets underway Friday. Founded by Suzy Amis Cameron (wife of director James Cameron), the contest not only provides a high-profile platform for environmentally friendly fashion, but it also serves as a fundraiser for MUSE School CA, a nonprofit, educational organization in Malibu Canyon that was founded by Amis Cameron and her sister, Rebecca Amis.

"My Uncle Rafael" elicits plenty of goofy chuckles even as it regularly threatens to fly off the rails. The film, directed by Marc Fusco from a script by Scott Yagemann and star Vahik Pirhamzei (based on a character from Pirhamzei's stage plays), feels a bit made up as it goes along but, like the best send-ups, also never feels so far from the actual truth. There's a nutty fidelity to the movie's title character, an alternately astute and dense 71-year-old Armenian immigrant, even if his ethnicity is more fodder for a gaggle of broad cultural references and ESL-tinged malaprops ("It's my way or the freeway!"

Perhaps Sherry Stringfield got used to moving quickly playing a doctor in the fast-paced emergency room. The "ER" actress received multiple offers and sold her Beverly Hills home after a month on the market for close to its $2,895,000 asking price. The Spanish-style home, built in 1928, has been updated yet maintains its period charm. The two-story house has a center hall, formal dining and living rooms, a family room, a study, an office, six bedrooms and three bathrooms in about 3,600 square feet.

Despite a growing embrace of environmentalism among many designers, so-called sustainable fashion continues to conjure notions of burlap. Awards show commentators rarely use the term - elegance just isn't synonymous with eco-friendly living. But at the Academy Awards, Missi Pyle, part of the ensemble cast of"The Artist," will walk the red carpet in a flowing blue gown made from organic silk, hand-dyed with natural mineral pigments and lined with recycled polyester. The gown was designed by Valentina Delfino, one of hundreds of designers around the world who submitted sketches to the third annual sustainable couture competition known as Red Carpet Green Dress in the hopes of presenting their creations on the most glamorous - and watched - red carpet in the world.
