When Cecilia Newball disappeared last week, she left behind her car and inside it a cryptic "goodby" card, her wedding and engagement rings, and a snapshot of her son. As if the message wasn't clear enough, a week later her husband received a letter saying Cecilia--who is 8 1/2 months pregnant--was headed for Honduras with another man. It seemed painfully obvious: Cecilia, 31, had left her husband. But the husband, Alfredo Newball, didn't buy that theory for a minute.

San Fernando police will search today for evidence in the disappearance of a woman three weeks ago. Starting at 9 a.m., San Fernando officers, Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies and volunteers will search the foothills above San Fernando at El Cariso Regional Park in Sylmar, said San Fernando Police Lt. Dan Peavy. "That is an area most likely to have some evidence related to her disappearance," Peavy said. "There may be some evidence people have not found yet."

A dead body found in a trash bin was identified by the coroner's office Thursday as a Van Nuys woman reported missing earlier this week. The body of Roberta LaBrie, 36, was discovered in a large box that was dumped into a garbage bin early Wednesday morning. Later that day police arrested Lawrence Johnson of Van Nuys in connection with her death. Johnson and LaBrie had been dating for two months before her death.

Two years ago, a hiker in the Angeles National Forest stumbled upon a human skull as she searched for a place to relieve herself. But who it belonged to remained unknown until last weekend when Los Angeles County sheriff's investigators identified the skull and other remains as those of Kumi Kojima, a 28-year-old Japanese hostess who entertained rich businessmen at a Little Tokyo nightclub.

A missing contract inspector for FEMA who had been the subject of an exhaustive search was found sleeping in a rental car Thursday near a North Hills motel where he had been staying, Los Angeles police said. Robert Francis Fisher, 39, who disappeared 10 days ago, was found before dawn in the car parked near his Sepulveda Boulevard motel. "There are indications Mr. Fisher had been using cocaine in recent days," Police Lt. Gene Brummell said.

Homicide investigators were searching Wednesday for a Sylmar woman after she was reported missing and blood was found near her abandoned car, police said. * Sandra Nevarez, 41, had gone to a coin laundry in the 13200 block of Gladstone Avenue on Tuesday morning to wash her family's clothes, Los Angeles Police Detective Frank Bishop said. Nevarez's Chevy Nova was found about 4:30 p.m. in the parking lot, and spatters of blood were spotted near the rear of the vehicle.

A 70-year-old El Centro woman missing since Saturday was found Wednesday afternoon. Eloisa Bermudiez Garrido, who walked away from her daughter's parked car near the Glendale Galleria, apparently wandered to a home near the mall, where she stayed until Wednesday afternoon. The family called police at about 5 p.m. Wednesday, saying they could not determine who the woman was or where she was from. "I just wish they would have called us earlier," Glendale police spokesman Lief Nicolaisen said.

Police requested the public's help Tuesday in a search for a 70-year-old El Centro woman who wandered away from a parked car Saturday while her daughter was shopping in the Glendale Galleria. Sgt. Lief Nicolaisen said it is critical that authorities find Eloisa Bermudiez Garrido because she suffers from short-term memory lapses and must take daily medication for a heart condition and diabetes. Garrido did not have any medicine with her at the time of her disappearance.

What has become of FEMA Inspector Robert Francis Fisher? The 39-year-old construction worker and building inspector left his Oakland home for Los Angeles several weeks ago to help inspect houses damaged in the Jan. 17 earthquake. He even "met a girl" on one inspection tour, whom he later took out to dinner, and bought a fishing pole at a neighborhood yard sale, his brother said Tuesday.

On the third day of Christmas, Dong-Sik) Chong, 81, stepped outside his family home in Koreatown for his daily walk. "Don't go too far, Father," his daughter, Yong-Sook Becher, cautioned him. The old man and his wife had just moved in with his daughter's family in their new home. When Chong, who is hard of hearing and doesn't speak English, didn't return home at the usual time, family members scoured the neighborhood and filed a missing-person report.

Police sent to an apartment to check on a missing man found his decomposing body with a gunshot wound to the chest, authorities said Wednesday. Officers found the body of 34-year-old Michael Alexander Avilez about 11:20 a.m. in the living room of a duplex in the 700 block of Laconia Boulevard, said Los Angeles Police Officer Mike Partain. Avilez, who was from Belize, had not been seen for about a week, and family members called police to ask them to check on him, Partain said.

Police asked for the public's help Tuesday in finding a man with the mental capacity of a 4-year-old who wandered away from an adult school in the Crenshaw area. Jesus Prado, 34, was last seen about 1:30 p.m. Monday near the Ideal School at 3970 W. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., said Los Angeles Police Det. Gene Solis. "He could be in critical condition because he gets attack seizures if he doesn't take his medicine," said his sister Rosa Prado.

A search continued Thursday for a developmentally disabled 19-year-old man who wandered away from a residential care facility in the Crenshaw district. Edmund Walters, who was last seen Tuesday at 43rd Street and Crenshaw Boulevard, has a history of wandering off, said his case manager, Terry McVerry. Walters, who is watched closely at a state-run boarding home, escaped through a bathroom window, McVerry said.

Authorities searched the waters from Santa Monica Bay to Santa Catalina Island on Friday morning for a 70-year-old Westchester man whose fishing boat was found aground at Dockweiler State Beach. Richard Davison's wife reported him missing Wednesday after the retired aerospace engineer failed to appear for a doctor's appointment that morning, she said. Mary Davison told officials that their 30-foot fishing boat was missing from its Marina del Rey slip and that her husband's car was parked there.

An intense search for a 67-year-old man believed lost in the Verdugo Hills was called off Monday when he turned up unharmed in Portland, Ore., apparently en route to see a daughter in Minnesota, police said. Byung Suk Kim, a retired electrical engineer, called the Pasadena dry cleaning business of his son-in-law, Ki Jung Lee, about 4 p.m. Monday to say that he had taken a bus to Oregon after leaving his Glendale house about 6 a.m. Sunday, Lee said.

Police are seeking the public's help in locating a missing 67-year-old man who went hiking early Sunday morning in the Verdugo Mountains. Byung Suk Kim told family members at 6 a.m. that he was going to go through Brand Park and then over a mountain to the La Crescenta area to another family member's home, according to Sgt. Tom Lorenz of the Glendale Police Department. "There are trails that take you over the top," Lorenz said. "There are a lot of roads and a lot of trails that aren't marked."

A 51-year-old man suffering from dementia is missing after walking away from a board-and-care facility in the Walnut area, a sheriff's spokeswoman said Friday. Harold Nicolas was last seen Wednesday night at the home on Bonnie Claire Drive, said sheriff's spokeswoman Britta Tubbs. "He climbed over the fence and walked away," Tubbs said. Nicolas is white, 5 feet, 4 inches tall, weighs 135 pounds, has hazel eyes and short brown hair and wears glasses.
