Perhaps the only thing more American than baseball is the drive to make money. So when Major League Baseball announced it would charge fans $9.95 to listen to a season's worth of games on the Internet, I was disappointed. But not greatly surprised. After using MLB.com's Gameday Audio system for the first few weeks of the 2001 season, I am somewhat disappointed by the spotty quality of radio broadcasts delivered over the Net. But again, I'm not surprised.

General Manager Omar Minaya and Manager Jerry Manuel will not be retained by the New York Mets, according to multiple media reports Friday. "It sounds like everybody's got me written off, but nobody's told me I'm written off," Manuel told MLB.com. He said he had not discussed his status with his superiors. The search for a new manager figures to take a while since the Mets are expected to first hire a general manager, who then will have input into the decision on a new manager.

CHICAGO - When the Angels got Josh Hamilton following the Dodgers' signing of Zack Greinke , owner Arte Moreno emerged from hiding, took a bow and told everyone: "Think about how much fun it's going to be. Dodger fans and Angels fans get to argue about whose team is better, who's stronger, who's weaker.… Do you know how much fun it's going to be?" What a blast …of hot air. Are you having fun yet? I began the week talking to Don Mattingly , who felt really good about the Dodgers after three straight losses to the Giants.

"Play ball!" Major League umpires won't shout those magical words in the Southland for nearly two more months. Can't wait that long? Then plan a jaunt to Arizona, where the Angels and 11 other teams will play in the Cactus League. In late March, they'll be joined by the Dodgers, who are moving their spring training from Florida to Arizona. It's all just a short flight -- or an easy drive -- from L.A.

Rocktober has swept Colorado, but more than 50,000 tickets remain unsold for the three World Series games that could be played between the Rockies and Boston Red Sox at Coors Field. With the Rockies' website under what team President Keli McGregor called "an external, malicious attack" Monday morning, the club was forced to temporarily suspend the sale of the tickets to its home games for the Series, which is being done exclusively online.
