A federal judge temporarily blocked government approval of Molecular Biosystems Inc.'s newest heart-imaging agent. U.S. District Judge Paul L. Friedman ordered the Food and Drug Administration not to approve the product, known as FS069, until it reconsiders a challenge by rival companies that say the FDA is using the wrong classification system to evaluate the ultrasound imaging agent. At stake are U.S. sales that could reach $150 million a year for the product, according to analysts.

Molecular Biosystems Inc. and Mallinckrodt Inc. said they won U.S. approval to sell the first of a new generation of imaging agents used with ultrasound procedures. The Food and Drug Administration approval for the product, called Optison, is key for San Diego-based Molecular Bio, which has been part of a legal struggle with Sonus Pharmaceuticals Inc. and other drug companies over how the FDA regulates imaging agents.

Molecular Biosystems Inc. has applied for federal Food and Drug Administration permission to begin clinical tests of its Albunex cardiac ultrasound contrast agent. Developed as a diagnostic aid for heart problems, Albunex could find a multimillion-dollar market, MBI officials and analysts say. But the payoff on Albunex, assuming that the FDA grants permission and that clinical trials are successful, will not be soon in coming.
