Re: Don Shirley's review ("A Sondheim Revue Rolls Merrily Along," Oct. 27): We saw the Sondheim show in previews last week and thought it was terrific. Being Sondheim devotees, there is nothing much that he does that we don't love. Your review was right on the money. When we left the theater we filled out our comments sheets and mentioned how terrible it was that Carol Burnett wore a German Iron Cross on her jacket. This is no statement to be made to anyone! It's not just an insignia, it's an affront.

Capital Pacific Holdings Inc. said Thursday it paid $120 million for a huge Dana Point golf, hotel and luxury home project put on hold by the early-1990s real-estate bust. The 225-acre Monarch Beach Resort site, mostly on the inland side of Pacific Coast Highway, includes an existing beach club and a golf course. The site, near the Ritz-Carlton hotel, has been pre-approved for a 400-room luxury hotel and 238 homes.

The government reports that 100,000 new jobs were just created; 25,000 of these were El Nino reporters and staffers necessary to report the next calamity. At the rate that the storms are developing, we may have new unemployment figures to report in the next few weeks. DON R. BEAVER Monarch Beach

In today's art reviews, Cathy Curtis is at it again using meaningless words in her critique ("All Dressed Up With Someplace to Go," Nov. 12). I quote: "Los Angeles artist Elizabeth Pulsinelli's discovery of a lot of women's and girls' dress patterns at a garage sale was the unlikely basis of a richly textured, satisfyingly unstructured conceptual art piece." How ridiculous! Since when is it called art a bunch of clothes hanging? Come, Cathy, do you do this with tongue in cheek? Or are you for real?

The city has decided to take a closer look at whether to seal off or move a public trail that provides access to the beach for residents near Dana Hills High School. The undeveloped path, which runs from Sea Canyon Park through the privately owned Monarch Beach neighborhood, provides public access to Dana Niguel Library, and Salt Creek Beach and Sea Terrace Community parks. The public trail was created as a condition of approval for the development of Monarch Beach homes.

I am writing to help others, and to bring to the public eye that violent crimes against the innocent are on the upswing. On the night before New Year's Eve, my girlfriend and I thought it would be romantic to go to the beach, where we had our first date. We always go to Laguna to listen to music and enjoy the company of our friends. Then we take a stroll along the moonlit beach and just talk and laugh--you know, the way new lovers do. It was about midnight on Diamond Street in Laguna Beach, on the beach as we were walking back to our car after a great night of just being together, when five youths jumped from the rocks and cut us off. I have been street-smart for many years and hold a degree in martial arts, so I knew what was happening.

An open letter to the producers of "Damn Yankees" (which played the Orange County Performing Arts Center Dec. 5-10) and Jerry Lewis in particular: Don't you know that Polish jokes are passe? So-called "humor" based on ethnic humiliation has no place in today's world. I was offended by Lewis' remarks, and I'm not even Polish. The Performing Arts Center must set a better example for all of us. JOHN LAGOURGUE Monarch Beach
