Dressing for the holidays is part of the season's fun. But forget the images you see in fashion magazines and on feel-good television commercials. In Southern California, the weather seldom requires swaddling in a plaid cashmere scarf, chunky fleece-lined boots, nubby cable sweater and peacoat. And we try to be savvy enough to just say no to a tacky Christmas sweater (unless we mean to wear it in an ultra-cool, ironic way). So how in this land of seasonless dressing does one add holiday cheer when the weather outside is far from frightful?

Actress Nina Dobrev is best known for playing Elena Gilbert on the hit CW show "The Vampire Diaries," but she garnered some much-deserved sartorial nods at the recent Toronto Film Festival. Dobrev made appearances alongside costar Emma Watson to promote their new film, "The Perks Of Being A Wallflower," slated to open Sept. 20.  Dobrev's looks ranged from formal gowns to flirty shorts ensembles. At the film's premiere, Dobrev looked like a princess in a Monique Lhuillier strapless, sequin embellished gown with full hem. She chose a sexier silhouette for a party at Soho House, wearing a red Elie Saab dress with a plunging neckline and a peplum waist.

The under-the-sea theme has been big on the runways the past couple of seasons, as seen at Monique Lhuillier, Chanel and elsewhere.  And now at the Emmys, where we've spotted several red carpet mermaids dressed in ocean-inspired styles -- Sofia Vergara in a backless teal, hand-beaded Zuhair Murad gown, Heidi Klum in a super-sexy aqua chiffon Alexandre Vauthier gown slit thigh high and Julianne Hough in a risqué, strapless sea foam green corset gown...

Ladies in red. The fall season's red-oxblood color trend seems to be influencing the Emmy red carpet. I love the sleeves on Mayim Bialik's deep burgundy Pamella Roland gown, though they must be really hot. Then there's Julia Louis-Dreyfus' classically beautiful, merlot-colored silk tulle Vera Wang mermaid gown with ruched accents on the bodice. And Tina Fey is wearing a strapless deep burgundy gown with corset detailing by Vivienne Westwood. But Ginnifer Goodwin's Monique Lhuillier dress with a high-low hem is my favorite so far because it's so unusual.

The Duchess of Cambridge wore a green belted coat by Hobbs and green hat by Gina Foster on Monday when she and the Duke of Cambridge greeted the 1st Battalion Irish Guards in a salute on St. Patrick's Day. She accessorized with a corsage of shamrocks and presented sprigs of shamrocks to guardsmen, including their canine mascot. The Emmys mark the official kickoff of awards show season, but there's the impression that less is at stake when it comes to red carpet fashion, because the audience is not as global as it is for the Oscars and the Golden Globes. So traditionally, the European houses skip it altogether, which can mean a lot of bland fashion on the Emmys red carpet. But not so this year. Chic simplicity is a real trend right now, and nobody does that like American designers, who are getting their moment in the spotlight.
