Three Orange County high school students took top honors in a Southland piano competition held at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday. First place awards went to Victoria Park of Irvine High School in the 12th-grade division, Jane Deng of University High School in Irvine (11th grade) and Jerry Wong of Canyon High School in Anaheim Hills (10th grade). More than 110 Southland piano students from second through 12th grades participated in the 10th annual Cal State Fullerton Piano Festival Competition.

Even on the sunniest of days, Rob Burnett looks out of his ground-floor window onto a cinder-block wall painted several shades of dirty beige. It's certainly not Broadway, which is where Burnett has resided the last four years as executive producer of "The Late Show With David Letterman."

Police searched Wednesday for suspects in shootings that left two teen-age boys wounded at a school in Montclair and a teen-age girl wounded outside a school in Banning. Two reputed gang members also were wounded in the Banning incident. Stunned Montclair High School students watched the lunch-hour shooting Tuesday. Police say the gunman was a former student. Lt. Terry Gibson said detectives know the identity of the teen-age gunman, but refused to release his name.

Amid charges of grade tampering and free tuition at Montclair Prep in Van Nuys, the CIF Southern Section Executive Committee Wednesday ordered an in-house investigation into the school's football program. The charges took place during a three-hour session, and there was speculation that the investigation could result in severe punishment for Montclair Prep.

Montclair Prep, long at odds with the Southern Section over recruiting violations, was voted out of the Alpha League on Wednesday by league members, reducing the school to free-lance status effective next school year. Five Alpha League members voted unanimously to oust Montclair Prep in a three-hour meeting of school principals at Marshall High in Pasadena.

Alpha League officials plan to propose further penalties against Montclair Prep's athletics program at a league meeting May 20, saying that Southern Section sanctions imposed against Montclair Prep two weeks ago for recruiting violations are not harsh enough. The Southern Section placed Montclair Prep on three years' probation and banned the Mounties from playoffs in all sports the next school year and for three years in football.

Laguna Hills had five wrestlers advance to the final round and came away with four champions and 166 1/2 points to win the Montclair Invitational on Friday at Montclair High School. Jeff Greco, ranked first in the county at 140 pounds, started the Hawks' run by pinning Brian Smith of Montclair in 1 minute 47 seconds. Jeff's brother Mike followed with a major decision, 9-0, against Gilbert Ochoa of Paramount at 145.

His high school guidance counselor was surprised when Alex Oceguera became a soldier. Oceguera was in the Junior ROTC at Montclair High School, but he'd never expressed any interest in an Army career, counselor Joe Reynaga said. "I was kind of shocked to hear that he went into the military after high school," Reynaga said. Oceguera, a 19-year-old San Bernardino native, was killed Oct. 31 when his vehicle struck a roadside bomb in Wygal Valley, Afghanistan.
